Discipline means obedience to the established rules of conduct. Man is a social animal. In order that the society may progress in harmony and peace, certain rules have been laid down in every society to guide the life and activities of its members. If any of these rules is broken, there is trouble, and the society suffers. In the family peace and happiness reign when the younger members obey their elders. But if the members subject to no authority and do what they like, the result is discord, and the family becomes a den of misery. Discipline in schools and colleges is necessary to build up character. The importance of discipline among soldiers is known to all. Every soldier has to blindly carry out the orders of his superiors. The slightest delay may result in defeat and destruction. Some mistake discipline as licence for freedom, and regard submissiveness to discipline as sacrifice of self-respect. But sensible men know that they are quite different.
