How to Do Amplification

Amplification

Expansion of an idea is called amplification. It has already been shown that when writing a paragraph, one has to expand an idea or topic sentence. In fact, amplification and paragraph are basically the same thing. The only difference is that the paragraph topic sentence is not given, the student has to make it, on the other hand the main statement is given in amplification.
The idea of many in our country is that amplification simply means the extension of a proverb. So it is seen that in various experiments, it is said to expand the base sentence, such as Honesty is the best policy. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Etc. That's not really the case. Expansion of any idea is called amplification. When a topic sentence is expanded in a paragraph, it also falls into the amplification stage.

How to do amplification? The way the topic sentence of the paragraph has to be expanded, the same has to be done in the case of amplification. However, in order to amplify the proverbial sentence, it may be necessary to explain the sentence or to define the important words used there. Moreover, examples, arguments, proofs, etc. have to be presented in support of the main statement. While amplifying, many people come up with unrealistic stories, such as Honesty is the best policy. Such unrealistic stories should not be used in amplification. Moreover, in telling such a well-known story there is no recognition of thinking power or observation ability, no gathering of new information, no reasoning philosophy. All in all, there is a tendency to memorize and present the writings of others. In amplification, as much information as possible should be taken from real life and expressed in one's own language.

Here are a few examples of amplifying proverbs that are given to amplify in different experiments.

Waste not, Want not.

Mode of amplification
(a) A restatement of the theme or idea
(b) Examples from every day life in support of the theme

Both experience and observation show that waste does lead to want. We waste our time. money or resources. and sooner or later we face shortages. Students who waste their time find themselves hard-pressed before examinations. Some people waste their money in a number of ways. They leave lights on when they do not need them: they take rickshaws or use cars when the place they are going to are within easy walking distance: they spend lavishly on luxury items. If one looks around, one finds waste of natural resources. There is scarcity of water in Dhaka city and yet many people waste it without any qualms. They wash their cars and water their lawns longer or more often than they should. Some leave their laps on after using them. There are many households in Dhaka city where gas cookers are seldom turned off just to avoid the trouble of lighting them again. If we go an wasting this valuable natural. resource, a time will come when we will have no gas left. There are innumerable examples of people or nations coming down in the world throngh extravagance. If we avoid waste of all kinds. we as individuals and as a nation can keep want at bay.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Mode of amplification

(a) Honesty defined in terms of its opposite quality, namely dishonesty
(b) Arguments in support of honesty

The opposite of honesty is dishonesty. Honesty is synonymous with truthfulnes: dishonesty is another name for deceit or cheating. One can get through life either honestly or dishonestly. However, it is best to be honest in all our dealings. For one thing, honesty always pays in the long run; dishonesty does not. For example, a shopkeeper who gives short weight is bound to get caught in the act of cheating sooner or later and then he is likely to go out of business. An honest shopkeeper. on the other hand, will never face such a prospect, and his busines is sure to thrive. A student cheating in an examination runs the risk of being expelled. Thus honesty is obviously the best policy. But it has other advantages too. Honesty is universlly regarded as an admirable quality. while dishonesty is roundly condemned by everybody. Honesty builds up a good reputation and wins appreciation. Appreciation, as the psychologists say. is one of our basic needs such as food. shelter and the like. What is more, an honest man has no problem of conscience. no feeling of guilt. He is at peace with himself. Finally, if we believe in after-life, we can presume that an honest man will be rewarded by our Maker. Thus honesty is not only the best policy, but it should also be one of the guiding principles of our life.

Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears a Crown

Mode of amplification

(a) Explanation of the theme
(b) Details in support of the theme

The expression "the head that wears a crown" obviously suggests a king or a queen because is kings or queens who wear crowns. A crown represents power or authority. Power or authority, as we know. has an irresistable attraction for some people, for they think that it makes for happiness. But what they do not know is that a crown also involves grave responsibilities. A king or a queen has to defend his or her country against foreign aggression, maintain law and order. feed the people and these responsibilities make him or her uneasy. So a manarch's life is not all happiness. We do not have many kings or queens around these days and the few we have are titular heads divested of all powers and responsibilities. But what was true of kings and queens in the past is also true of modern presidents and prime ministers. The problems of the monarchs still exist in some form or another. The saying also goes for anybody having any power or authority-- the head of a family. the head of a corporation or any other organization. The head of a family, for instance. has to support his family. educate his children and provide for them. Similarly, the head of an organization has to attend to a great many things to make it function smoothly. Thus the saying "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown" has a universal application.

Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Freedom.

Mode of development

(a) Comment on the key term 'freedom' in the statement
(b) Details in support of the need for vigilance

Freedom in the sense of political independence is a precious thing a birth-right. There is no nation which willingly parts with it. and accepts colonialism or slavery. History teems with examples of nations fighting hard and fighting long, and making supreme sacifices for the sake of freedom. The liberation wars in Vietnam. Algeria, Bangladesh and Afganistan are recent examples. But once freedom is achieved, there is no room for complacency. Threat to freedom always looms large. Enemies lie in wait to take away this brith-right. Because of the threat of foreign aggression all nations.big or small, maintain. at enormous cost. armed forces who keep vigilance all the time. But the danger to freedom comes not simply in the form of foreign aggression. It also takes many subtle formis. Cultural subversion, economic exploitation by countries masquerading as friends. foreign spies can also undermine freedom. The armed forces can do very little to deal with these subtle dangers. So what is required is eternal vigilance-constant watch on the part of not only the armed forces but also the government and the nation as a whole. It is not a pleasant thing to do; it is not a pleasant situation to endure, but it is the price a nation has to pay for freedom.

Sweet are the Uses of Adversity

Mode of amplification
(a) The meaning of the statement
(b) Details in support of the statement

Very few people accept adversity or misfortune with a good grace. Most of us grumble when beset with difficulties and dangers. These upset us and make us unhappay. But what we do not know is that adversity is not whithout its uses and that these uses are good for us. People enjoying good fortune excite envy in others and envy often provokes rivalry and enmity. But nobody envies a man who has fallen into adversity. His misfortune might arouse pity. but it never gives rise to rivalry or enmity resulting from envy. It is no small comfort to be safe from these uncharitable, not to say, dangerous impulses. Life is a mixture of joys and sorrows. We appreciate joys better when we go through sorrow just as we appreciate light better after darkness. Thus the unpleasant experiences of life are what we might call necessary evils. Adversity also spiritualizes us. It make us feel sympathy for people in similar situations. It brings out our humanity. We become higher and nobler. According to the Quran. God sometimes tests us through misfortunes. If we stand the test. if we do not waver in our faith, we can look forward to rewards from Him in the hereafter. Il not here. Thus the uses of adversity are sweet indeed!

AMPLIFICATION

What is Amplification?

Amplification means expansion of thought.

Amplification means “material added to a statement, story, etc, in order to expand or clarify it.” (collinsdictionary)

We amplify a sentence, phrase, etc. to expand/clarify the understandability (of it).

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

The saying bears a great importance It teaches us a good moral lesson. It means that in helping others we should begin with our close relatives and friends. There are many people among us who care more for persons who are not their near and dear ones. They take it to be a sign of their generosity and kindness and feel proud of it. They ignore their own blood connected relatives and friends. They fight shy of them. They do not want to give the acquaintances of their poor relatives to others. But we should not forget that it is our moral obligation to help our poor relatives. Our poor relatives and friends expect something from us. When we are in prosperity, we should extend our kindness to them, We should share their sorrows and sufferings. We should try our main and might to lessen their distress because they took pains in bringing up us. If we can not feel for them first, we can not feel for others: If we do otherwise, it is like an act of trechery. The man who shows kindness not to his own relatives but to others only does so with a view to commanding other's praise. But, in fact, he forfeits respect, name and fame.

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD

The proverb means that the pen of the writer bears a greater importance and exercises an influence on men and the world than a military conqueror. Many great military men have conquered many states but their conquests have perished into the deep abyss of eternity. Their victories had little influence on the people of the world because a conquest by sword is not permanent. It can subdue the people but can not win their heart. People become oblivious of the conquest of an army man. A sword is a symbol of power but not of love. On the other hand the writings of the great writers leave an enduring impression in the heart of the people which can not be effaced out. They are treasured up in human heart. The conquest of a military man is confined to certain parts of the world but the writings of the great writer exercise influence on the people of the entire globe. With the passage of time the conquest of a military man melts into nothingness and is forgotten after his death.

THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH, YIELDING PLACE TO THE NEW

Since the dawn of civilization time is flowing without any stop. That is why things are always changing. There is nothing permanent or stable in the world because change is the law of nature. What is new today grows old tomorrow. Childhood changes into youth and winter into spring. Thus our mode of living is quite different from our forefathers. Even today the thoughts, ideas and outlook of a modern man vary from an old man's. As the civilisation is progressing day by day, this change is becoming more and more rapid and marked. We may not welcome the changes but we can not stop them as they are both essential and natural. So we should accept the change as inevitable and undeniable because had things remained in the same conditions, they would have become stale and dull. Life would have no meaning. There would have been no advancement. The onward march of civilisation would have been retarded. So the change is essential for the advancement of civilisation. Change is thus the mark of progress. It brings revolution in thoughts, ideas etc. This is why the old order changeth yielding place to the new.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

There is no unintrupted blessings on earth. We may fall victim to many dangers in our way of life. We may be attacked with any disease at any time. But we can avoid any danger or get rid of a disease by taking timely steps. This very proverb teaches us this lesson. The proverb means that it is far better to prevent a disease than to cure it because what can not be prevented at first become very difficult for cure. Later on we all know that AIDS is a fatal disease to the whole human civilization is a great threat to human civilization. It takes a heavy rolls of life every year. Had preventive methods been adopted timely, it could not have spread so far. But now not curing of AIDS is the main factor but the prevention, Similary we should take timely action to prevent any mischief or corruption so that we do not have to pay dearly for the mischief or corruption in future.

NO RISK, NO GAIN / NOTHING VENTURE, NOTHING HAVE / NO PAINS, NO GAINS

Everybody desires success in life but few attains it. One of the main reasons that can be attributed to this failure is that we dare not take risks. Life is full of troubles and difficulties. They are to be overcome it we want success in life because success does not come automatically. We should bear the courage to fight against the misfortunes of life. Our first attempt may not bring us any fruitful result but we should keep in mind that failure is the pillar of success. It is failure which inspires a man to struggle hard to combat the misfortunes of life. If we cast our eyes to the explorers and discoverers of land and sea, what will we see? We will see that they have risked their lives, faced the sufferings bravely and won the victory of laurel. A man lacking determination can not take any risk and for this he gains nothing. On the other hand the man who faces risk bravely gains a lot. But risks should be taken carefully otherwise it will lead to disaster.

UNITY IS STRENGTH

Unity is a great quality of human being. It enables us to produce a result conducive to the common good. No single person can do what is to be done by several persons unitedly. The real strength lies in unity. If all the members of a family are united and work for its good, it is sure to prosper. But if they are disunited, the family will never see the light of prosperity. Similarly no nation can continue as a free and independent one if its citizens are disunited. We lost our independence in the battle of Palassey because we were not united. Again it was this unity among the people of our dear Bangladesh in their fight against the brutal Pakistani army that enabled them to snatch away the red rose of independence.
The citizens of even a poor small country are united, they are able to dotend the aggression of any powerful state. They are able to defend any foreign invasion. So it is clear that unity is strength and its leads to Success.

MAN IS BORN FREE BUT EVERYWHERE HE IS CHAINED

When a man is born, he is quite free. He is free from all sorts of bondages. He enjoys absolute freedom. The more he grows in years, the more does he find himself in chains. In his intancy, he can not support himself. So he depends on his mother. When he grows up, he can not do whatever he likes. He is to respect others right. He is to maintain the law and order of the socie His movements are restricted. In his youth he is very restless. He wants to spend much of his time in games and sports. He wants to pass this golden period of time in merriment. But he can not do so. He is to attend schools or colleges. He has to concentrate his mind to studies. After successful completion of his studies, he is on the look out for a good job. There he faces the hard realities of life. He shoulders the responsibility of maintaining his own family. He looks after his old parents grappling with death. In matters of religion he lives in harmony with others. After all these, man hankers after a life of ease, comfort and freedom. But the cruel reality does not allow him to lead a life free from all social chains. So it can be said that man comes to this earth freely but after his birth he is chained everywhere.

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD

Gold is the most precious and useful of all metals. It glitters and looks very beautiful. There are also many worthless things that can be made to glitter but they are not real gold. This means that all that glitters is not gold. So the proverb teaches us that we should not judge a thing on its outward appearance because appearances are deceptive. A man wearing a fine dress may be a gentleman in his outward appearance but in reality he may be a criminal. As a matter of fact the people who are wicked out and outlook very polished and gentle. In our day to day life we find many men who pretend to be our real friends and well wishers. They throng round us in our prosperity but they desert us when we are in evil days. Similarly we should not be attracted to a thing which is very showy in its external appearance because the thing may be worthless in quality. On the other hand, an ordinary man is better than the man who pretends to be a gentle man. The ordinary man will not do any harm to us although he does not seem to be gentle in his outward appearance. So face is not always the index of mind.

A LITTLE LEARNING IS A DANGEROUS THING

The well known proverb has a deep meaning in it. It warns us against the danger of shallow knowledge. So a man with little leaming poses to be a vast learned man and behaves in the most artificial way. He always talks big and wants to prove himself a man of letters, He brings no good to the society. He does more harm than good. He does not care for the others, opinion. He is not headed and unsober. He always boasts of his learning He with his shallow knowledge leads man in the wrong path. However, he is a laughing stock before a circle of real educated persons. On the other hand, a learned man is sober, soft and sound. He is polite and gentle in his manner. He never boasts of his learnings. He does not talk much. He attracts one to all with the depth of his knowledge. He has the strength of mind and brain. The more he learns, the more does he feel that he has learnt a little. He has many things to learn. He thinks that he is an lota in the ocean of knowledge. But a man of little learning does not think so. He thinks that he has learnt a lot.

FAILURE IS THE PILLAR OF SUCCESS

(FAILURES ARE THE PILLARS OF SUCCESS)

Life is not a bed of roses. It is full of thorns. There are ups and downs in life. Life means perpetual struggle. We are to fight hard against cruel realities of life. Our attempts always may not be crowned with success. We may fail once and again but we should not lose heart Rather we should take heart and advance with indomitable spirit and invincible will power. We should not consider failure a curse. We should accept it heartily because failures are not really as bad as they are thought to be. Failure is a curse to those who lack in action and have no determination. But failure can not dishearten a man of iron will and firm determination. It develops our latent powers and strengthens our mind. It teaches a man to be self determined. Failure makes us conscious of our defects and helps us to rectify ourselves. We can know the reason of our unsuccess from failure. Then we can start our work with new energy and finish it successfully. So failure, instead of damping our spirits, paves the way to success.

A ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS

Moss does not gather on a stone which rolls from place to place. Similarly a man who constantly changes his occupation can never win success. No moss of wealth, reputation and honour can gather upon a man who most often changes his profession. If anyone wants to crown his life with success, it is, therefore, necessary that he should adhere to one thing for a long time. A man who constantly changes his vocation is never trusted by the public. He can not command others' respect. His first attempt may not be crowned with success but he should not forget that failure is the pillar of success. He should not change his profession. Rather he should stick to it and try again and again. An unstable character should be patient and persevering. On the other hand a person who adheres to one thing in spite of recurrent failures can succed in life. He does not fly from one thing to another. He does not undo his fortune by changing his profession. He remains steady at his job and draws others attention and that is the way to success and prosperity.

INDUSTRY IS THE MOTHER OF GOOD LUCK

In this mundane life there is nobody who does not nourish within himself the hope of fortune. But fortune does not come automatically. It is to be earned through hard labour and patient diligence. A man has to be perseverant and painstaking to achieve fortune in life. Very few men attain fortune because they do not make a proper division of their time and perform their duties timely. They while away their time in sheer idleness. They have no courage to fight against the failures of life. Once they fail, fail for ever. They lose heart when they face difficulties. They forget that man falls to rise. They never get the favour of God. On the other hand the men who are industrious, perseverant, hard working win fortune in the end The men who possess strong will power and exert the strength of mind are sure to attain fortune. They are never baffled. They face any sort of difficulty however big or small, bravely. They never depend on others. They believe in their strength and power of action. Sincere efforts and hard work have got reward of its own. So industry is the mother of good luck.

WHERE THER IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY

Everybody wants to achieve success but few achieves it. There are many reasons behind this failure. But the most important reason is that most of the people lack in strength of will. Nothing results from mere wishing. A man who is weak minded gives up the hope of success being frightened by the initial difficulties. But if a man does not lose heart and breasts the difficulties, he is sure to attain success. Life is nothing but the sumtotal of some hours and days. In this short sojourn upon earth life is full of thorns and obstacles. So a man's effort may not be always crowned with success. But this does not mean that he should give up hope. Rather he should take heart and stick to another. No obstacle can stand in the way of iron will and strong determination. The human history is full of many glaring examples in this regard.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

Honesty is a divine quality in man. It never goes unrewarded here and in the world hereafter. During the short sojourn upon earth it brings a man great glory and honour. He has peace of mind. Evil days may befall him but he never moves an inch from the right path of honesty. He is happy with what he has. He may not be well off but he is large hearted. An honest man never nourishes high ambition because he knows that high ambition leads a man astray. He is free from greed. No tempting offer can move him An honest man is afraid of none because he has got the courage to defend himself. On the contrary a dishonest man can eam vast wealth and enjoy temporary worldly happiness, but he has no peace of mind. He is always bitten by the qualm of conscience. So the path of dishonesty should be avoided. Rather the virtue of honesty should be cultivated from our very tender age.

A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED

Man is social being. He can not live alone, From time immemorial he has been living together. In his day to day life he keeps company with different class of people. He exchanges views and ideas with many men But all men are not his true friend. It is very difficult to find a true friend. There are many men who pretend themselves to be our real friends when we live in prosperity. But when we are in danger, when misfortune befalls us these so called real friends take to their heels. Real friends are those who help us, console us, share our weal and woe stand by us in times of naad and danger. The test of real friends comes only in misfortune. True friends are not the cuckoo of the spring which does not come out in winter. Real friends never desert us when we are in dangers. They try to correct us when we go astray. To have a real friend is a blessing of God indeed.

A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED

MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES

This is a well known and popular proverb. The meaning of the proverb is that we must not let any opportunity slip, any chance to get a work done. Instead of missing a chance or an opportunity we must make prompt and full use of it whenever it comes because we know that chance or opportunity does not come too many. It comes only once. Our life is uncertain. We do not know what is in store for us today and what will be tomorrow. We are quite hearty and healthy today but we may be ill and bed ridden tomorrow. So if we miss any chance or opportunity, we have to suffer a lot because we are not sure that another chance will come and then we will make the best use of that chance. So we shall employ all our energy and means to make the best use of an opportunity. The wise men of the world do not miss any chance or opportunity. The wise men take the chance at the right moment and do not leave it for tomorrow and in this way they make hay while the sun shines.

WE LIVE IN DEEDS NOT IN YEARS

Man has no escape from the cruel clutches of death. But it matters little because life is not measured by months or years but by his noble deeds and actions. A long life with an empty record is of little consequence and significance. Those who live a long life without doing something beneficial to humanity are forgotten after their death. They are not held in due respect. No tombstone is erected on their grave. They die unsung and unhonoured. On the other hand the people who live a short life but render great services to humanity are honoured for ever by all. Those who sacrifice their lives for the good of the whole world are remembered to the end though they do not live in the midst of living men. So long the universe continues, so long the air blows, their memory is over fresh and ever green and will remain ever fresh. So it is clear that man does not live in years but in good deeds that he does for the benefit of mankind.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

Health is the most precious asset of a man. A man of ill health is a burden to him. He finds no interest and joy in life. Life is dull and meaningless to him. He may possess vast wealth but his wealth can not bring happiness and mental peace for him. He may be intelligent and learned but his intelligence and learnings are of no avail because he can not make a proper utilization and exploitation of them for his own sake or for the good of others. He cannot enjoy the beautiful scenery and sight. On the other hand a man blessed with a good health is always happy and jolly. He is sober and sound. He does not lose interest in life. He does not lose his temper. He is agile in his movement and prompt in his action. He relishes his food however poor it may be. He enjoys the beauties of nature to his heart content, derives much pleasure and remains happy and fresh. Again a sound mind lives in a sound body. Illness of the one inevitably affects the other. Moreover, success in life depends on hard work and hard work is not possible to do without good health. So a healthy man can attain success in life but it is quite opposite to a man of ill health. So health is wealth.
