Recognition of signal word:
Signal word refers to a word or phrase that acts as a connector in a sentence or sentences. These words are important. If you don't understand these, you can't catch the author's statement. The following are commonly used signal words:
(Signal word বলতে এমন শব্দ বা phrase বুঝায় যা বাক্যে অথবা বাক্যের মধ্যে connector বা যোগসুত্র হিসেবে কাজ করে। এই শব্দগুলো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এগুলো না বুঝলে লেখকের বক্তব্য ধরা যায় না। যে সমস্ত signal word সচরাচর ব্যবহৃত হয় সেগুলো নীচে উল্লেখ করা):
a. Words signifying Addition: and, as well as, besides, apart from, in addition to, moreover, furthermore
b. Words signifying Contrast: but, though, although, still, yet, despite, even though, in contrast have.
c. Words signifying Emphasis: in fact, above all, indeed, in particular, especially, particularly, in effect
d. Words signifying Cause- Effect Relationship: accordingly, as a result, so, therefore, thus, as a consequence, so that, because of, owing to, in view of, on account of, etc
e. Word signifying Condition: if, when, unless, provided
f. Words signifying Doubt or Hypothesis: possibly, probably, perhaps
g. Words signifying Sequence or Order of Events: first, next, then, firstly, secondly, finally, lastly, in the first place
h. Words signifying Comparison: like, unlike, likewise, in the same way, in the same manner, similarly
i. Words signifying Illustration: for example, for instance, that is, namely, such as
j. Words singifying Summary: on the whole, in short, in brief, to sum up, in conclusion, to conclude
