Each other, one another —
It has been stated that the rule that each other is generally used when two are referred to, one another when more than two are referred to, is not observed even by good writers. The following illustration are given to prove that statement:
1. The two women did not love one another — Virgin Soil, Chapter VI, para 8.
2. Surely, there was some singular power of attraction between the two for their flashing eyes again dwelt earnestly on one another — Ardath by Marie Correllie; Pt. II. Chapter II, about the beginning.
3. Larry-The fact is, fond as we are of one another, Nora, we have so little common etc. — John Bull's Other is island by Bernard Shaw, Act IV.
4. There was no arrangement for the liquidation of the debts piled up by the Allies against each other — Ibid. p. 79.
5. Mooch and Weil were acquainted, but had little sympathy with one another-John Christopher, Book IV. p. 378.
6. Then they (refers to 7 or 8 men) hurled abuse at each other — War, Wine and Women, p. 206.
7. They all looked at each other, these young, eager men and women. — A House Divided by P. Buck, Chapter III, p. 1017.
8. The British and the French did not declare war upon one another — The British Empire and Commonwealth by J. A. Williamson. p. 134.
