NOUN-PRONOUN AGREEMENT
Noun ও Pronoun-এর ব্যবহারজনিত ভুল:
(i) And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি Singular Noun-এর পূর্বে যদি Each অথবা Every থাকে তবে এদের পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত Pronounটি Singular হয়।
Incorrect: Every clerk and every peon should do their duties.
Correct: Every clerk and every peon should do his duty.
(ii) যখন দুই বা ততোধিক Singular Noun 'and' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তখন তাদের পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত Pronounটি Singular হয়।
Incorrect: Kazal and Sazal are attentive to his lessons.
Correct: Kazal and Sazal are attentive to their lessons.
(iii) দুই বা ততোধিক Noun যদি or, either or বা neither nor দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তবে তাদের পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত Pronounটি Singular হয়।
Inc: Either Noman or Mahbub do their homework.
Cor: Either Noman or Mahbub does his homework.
Inc: Neither Noman nor Mahbub did their homework.
Cor: Neither Noman nor Mahbub did his home work.
Inc: Jalil or Alma tried their best to save the boy.
Cor: Jalil or Alam tried his best to save the boy.
(iv) একটি Plural Noun ও একটি Singular Noun যদি or বা nor দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তবে তাদের পরিবর্তে Plural হয়।
Inc: Either the teachers or the Headmaster has succeeded in his attempt.
Cor: Either the teachers or the Headmaster have succeeded in their attempt.
Inc: Neither the teachers nor the Headmaster has succeeded in his attempt. Cor: Neither the teachers nor the Headmaster have succeeded in their attempt.
(v) Collective Noun-এর পরিবর্তে যে Pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয় তা Singular number ও Neuter Gender হয় এবং তখন Verb-এর Singular form হয়। কিন্তু Noun of Multitude হলে ব্যবহৃত Pronoun-টি Plural হয় এবং Verb-এর Plural form বসে।
Inc: The jury was divided in its opinions.
Cor: The jury were divided in their opinion. (Noun- Multitude)
(vi) Noun এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত Pronoun অনুযায়ী Number, Gender ও Person হয়ে থাকে ।
The girl lost her book. (not his)
She is a poetess. (not poet)
(vii) First Person, Second Person এবং Third Person একই Sentence-এ ব্যবহৃত হলে প্রথমে Second Person, Third Person এবং শেষে First Person বসে। (সংক্ষেপে একে 231 বলা হয়)
Inc: I, you and he are friends.
Cor: You, he and I are friends.
(viii) অন্যান্য Noun এবং Pronoun-এর সঙ্গে First Person ব্যবহৃত হলে এদের পরিবর্তে First Person-এর Plural Pronoun ব্যবহৃত না হয়ে Second Person থাকলে Second Person-এর Pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Inc: He and I did his best.
Cor: He and I did our best.
Inc: You and your supporters are guilty for their evil motives.
Cor: You and your supporters are guilty for your evil motives.
Use of 'This and That' as Pronouns:
(i) This এবং these নিকটের ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে এবং that ও those দূরের ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে নির্দেশ করে । This-এর Plural these এবং that-এর Plural those.
This is my house.
That is a school.
পূর্ববর্তী Clause বা Sentence-এ দুটি Noun-এর উল্লেখ থাকলে পরবর্তীটির জন্য this এবং পূর্ববর্তীটির জন্য that ব্যবহৃত হয় ।
Suman and Sabbir are friends; this (Sabbir) is a footballer and that (Suman) is a cricketer.
(ii) কখনও কখনও পূর্ববর্তী Clause-এর পরিবর্তে this বা that ব্যবহৃত হয়।
He says his prayers and that (i. e, he says his prayers) proves his devotion to God.
(iii) One, ones, none, the same, such এবং so এরাও Demonstrative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
(a) Such: পূর্ববর্তী কোনো None-কে নির্দেশ করতে Demonstrative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এটt Singular ও Plural উভয় Number-এ ব্যবহৃত হয় ।
He is a born criminal and acts as such.
If you are my well wisher (well wishers), prove (yourself) as such.
(b) The same : অনেক সময় The same-ও Demonstrative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
He made the same mistake as his brother (that his brother made)
(c) So : So যখন Demonstrative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন এরা say, think, tell ইত্যাদি Verb-এর পরে বসে। এক্ষেত্রে so Indefinite ( অনির্দিষ্ট ) Demonstrative Pronoun.
Do you think that he will make a good result? I think so. (this/that)
(d) One, ones : পূর্ববর্তী Noun-এর পুনরাবৃত্তি এড়ানোর জন্য Demonstrative Pronoun হিসেবে one এবং তার Plural- ones ব্যবহৃত হয়।
This is your pen; it is good one.
The mangoes are not good; I want some good ones.
