11. Can Informal ইংরেজীতে কাউকে কিছুর permission দিতে may অপেক্ষা can এর ব্যবহারই বেশী। যেমন,
You can sit here.
ভবিষ্যতের জন্য অনুমতি দিতেও can ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন,
You can borrow my camera tomorrow.
কিন্তু সক্ষমতা প্রকাশার্থে can ব্যবহার করতে হবে শুধুমাত্র বর্তমানের জন্য, ভবিষ্যতের জন্য নয়। যেমন, I can walk now.
কিন্তু I can do the work tomorrow বাক্যটি ভুল। এখানে বলতে হবে
I shall/will be able to do the work tomorrow. সম্ভাবনা বা অনিশ্চয়তা বুঝাতে can নয়, may/ might ব্যবহার করতে হবে। যেমন,
It may / might rain today.
12. Cannot : এটি হচ্ছে formal ইংরেজীতে ব্যবহৃত একটি negative modal যার informal form হচ্ছে "can't". Cannot কে সব সময়ই একটি single শব্দ হিসেবে লিখতে হবে। can এবং not কে কখনো আলাদা করে লেখা যাবে না। যেমন,
Right: He cannot do such work.
Wrong: He can not do such work.
13. Cinema Cinema অর্থ প্রেক্ষাগৃহ" বা "চলচিত্র শিল্প" বা "চলচিত্র প্রদর্শনী", যেমন,
There is only one cinema in this town.
He works in the cinema.
Let's go to the cinema.
কিন্তু cinema কে film এর প্রতিশব্দ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে না। যেমন,
Wrong : We are watching a cinema.
Right: We are watching a film.
বাংলাতেও “আমরা সিনেমা দেখছি” কথাটা ভুল।
14. Condole : এটি একটি intransitive verb যার অর্থ “অন্যের শোকে শোক প্রকাশ করা"। এর সঠিক ব্যবহার হচ্ছে এরকম :
We condoled with him on/over his father's death.
কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের ইংরেজী পত্র-পত্রিকাগুলোতে প্রায়ই দেখা যায় condole -কে transitive verb হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে এ ধরনের headline লেখা হয়েছে :
"X's death condoled"
আসলে death কে কখনো condole করা যায় না।
Wrong: We condoled his death.
Right: We mourned his death.
মনে রাখতে হবে condole -এর পরে অবশ্যই with বসিয়ে তারপর একটি personal object বসাতে হবে।
15. Could : এই modal -টি ব্যবহৃত হয় অতীতের ক্ষমতা, বর্তমানের বিনীত অনুরোধ এবং ভবিষ্যতের অনিশ্চয়তা কিংবা সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশার্থে। যেমন,
I could swim when I was five. (অতীত ক্ষমতা)
could you please help me? (বিনীত অনুরোধ) He could go there. (সম্ভাবনা)
মনে রাখতে হবে time reference ছাড়া could সম্বলিত positive statement অতীতের সক্ষমতা বুঝায় না। আমি কাজটি করতে পেরেছিলাম' বুঝাতে “I could do the work" বাক্যটি ভুল। বলতে হবে,
I was able to do the work.
পক্ষান্তরে "I could not সব সময় অতীতকেই বুঝাবে, কখনোই ভবিষ্যকে নয়।
16. Dilemma : Dilemma বলতে সাধারণত এমন অবস্থা বুঝায় যেখানে কোন ব্যক্তিকে একই রকম খারাপ বা অনাকাঙ্খিত দু'টো কাজের মধ্যে একটিকে বেছে নিতে হয়ে। যেমন,
She was in a dilemma as to whether to lose her job or sleep with her boss.
কিন্তু সাধারণ কোন সমস্যার ক্ষেত্রে dilemma শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা ঠিক নয়। যেমন,
I faced a dilemma about how to entertain him.
এই বাক্যটিতে dilemma শব্দটির স্থলে problem ব্যবহার করাই যুক্তিসঙ্গত।
"His delay created a dilemma for us" – এই বাক্যটিতে dilemma শব্দটির প্রয়োগ সঠিক নয়।
17. Disbelieve এটি একটি অপেক্ষাকৃত জোরালো এবং formal বা আনুষ্ঠানিক শব্দ। এটি সাধারণত: believe এর antonym বা বিপরীত শব্দ নয়। যখন কোন গল্প বা উক্তি গ্রহনযোগ্য বিবেচিত না হয় তখনই disbelieve verbটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন,
There is no reason to disbelieve his story.
কিন্তু “আমি তোমাকে বিশ্বাস করি না" এই বাক্যটি ইংরেজীতে হবে " don't believe you". এখানে
"I disbelive you" বলা ভুল হবে।
18. Discuss :
এটি একটি transitive verb বিধায় এর পরে কোন preposition ব্যবহারের প্রয়োজন নেই। কিন্তু অনেকেই অনেক সময় ভুলক্রমে এই verb টির পরে about preposition টিকে ব্যবহার করে থাকেন। যেমন,
Wrong: They discussed about the matter.
Right: They discussed the matter.
Wrong : We are discussing about karim.
Right: We are discussing karim.
19. Doubt that : Doubt এর পরে that বসে শুধুমাত্র negative statement -এ। যেমন,
I don't doubt that he is honest.
There's no doubt that he will come.
Positive statement- এ doubt-এর পর সাধারণত: if/ whether বসে। যেমন,
I doubt if/ whether he is telling the truth.
There is some doubt whether he will come.
Negative statement ছাড়া অন্য ক্ষেত্রের doubt -এর পর that ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়। যেমন,
" I doubt that he is honest" বাক্যটি ভুল।
20. Drive : Drive অর্থ কোন যানবাহন চালানো বুঝালেও এ শব্দটি সব ধরণের যানবাহনের ক্ষেত্রে প্রযোজ্য নয়। বাস বা কার চালানোর ক্ষেত্রে drive ব্যবহার করতে হবে। যেমন,
Can you drive me to the station?
কিন্তু সাইকেল, জাহাজ কিংবা উড়োজাহাজ চালানোর ক্ষেত্রে drive প্রযোজ্য নয়। যেমন,
Can you drive a bicycle?
কিংবা
I don'st know how to drive a ship.
উপরোক্ত বাক্য দুটিতে drive এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়। সাইকেল চালানো হচ্ছে ride, জাহাজ চালানো হচ্ছে pilot এবং উড়োজাহাজ চালানো হচ্ছে fly বা Pilot.
