Sentence: Basic Concept, Part 1

🔷 Sentence
A sentence is the written expression of a complete thought. 

In most sentences, the reader is given one complete piece of information.

A sentence needs to contain the following:
- a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end
-  a subject (person / people or thing(s) that is / are doing something)
- a verb (action or doing word).

Example:
Journalists work in the media.



🔶 Sentence is of five kinds according to its meaning:

01. Assertive Sentence: It expresses a simple statement which may be
affirmative or negative: 
i. He is an honest man.
ii. He is not an honest man.

02. Interrogative Sentence: It denotes a question that may be affirmative
or negative: 
i. Is he an honest man?
ii. Is he not an honest man?

03. Imperative Sentence: It expresses order, command, request, advice etc. which may be affirmative or negative :
i. Read your lessons.
ii. Never tell a lie.

Note: Imperative sentence may begin with 'Let'.
i. Let us learn English. .
ii. Let him do the work.


04 Optative Sentence: It expresses wish or desire or blessing:
i. May you live long.
ii. Long live our countiy.
iii. May Allah help you.

05. Exclamatory Sentence: It indicates sudden expression of emotion or strong feelings. 
i. What a beautiful flower it is!
ii. Alas! He is dead.
iii. Hurrah! We have won the game.

✍️ Sentence is of three types according to its form and structure. 

They are:
a) Simple Sentence
b) Complex Sentence
c) Compound Sentence



1. Simple sentence
There are three main types of sentences. 

The first of these is called a simple sentence. 

A simple sentence has one independent clause and expresses one idea.

Example:
The company plans to market the products overseas.

A simple sentence must have one subject-verb combination but the subject may be compound, i.e. may have more than one element.

Example:
The managemet and staff were please to announce the results.

A Simple sentence can also have a compound verb construction.
Example: They worked hard and produced an excellent display.

🔷 Simple sentences can only have only one subject-verb combination and commas are not used

Below are some examples of the different combinations that we might find in simple sentences.

Examples:
1. The company was very successful.
2. The company is profitable and leads the market.
3. This company and its rival both offer competitive prices.
4. The manager and staff negotiated and compromised successfully.
