Correction with Verbs
1. Die, apologise, arrive, atone, awake, coincide, commiserate,
compete, complain, condole, connive, consent, converge, decay, depend, occur, belong, appear, disappear, consist, appeal, ensue ইত্যাদি verb-গুলো intransitive হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। ফলে এদের passive voice হয় না। যেমন:
Inc: His father was died last year.
Cor: His father died last year.
Inc: The fog was dispersed.
Cor: The fog dispersed.
Inc: The book is belonged to me.
Cor: The book belongs to me..
Inc: A quarrel was ensued at this.
Cor: A quarrel ensued at this.
Inc: Our family is consisted of five members.
Cor: Our family consists of five members.
2. Adjective-এর পরে infinitive-এর active voice হয়, passive voice হয় না।
Inc: English is easy to be learnt.
Cor: English is easy to learn.
Inc: Cricket is interesting to be played.
Cor: Cricket is interesting to play.
3. Stop, finish, prefer, avoid, like ইত্যাদি transitive verb-এর পরে সাধারণত infinitive না বসে gerund (verb + ing) বসে। যেমন:
Inc: I cannot avoid to do it.
Cor: I cannot avoid doing it.
Inc: He has finished to read the book.
Cor: He has finished reading the book.
Inc: I like to read novels.
Cor: I like reading novels.
Inc: We should stop to smoke.
Cor: We should stop smoking.
কিন্তু 'stop' কে ‘intransitive verb হিসেবে ব্যবহার করলে তার পরে উদ্দেশ্য বুঝাতে to infinitive বসতে পারে। যেমন, “He stopped to smoke” অর্থ হচ্ছে সে ধূমপানের উদ্দেশ্যে থামলো।
4. Prohibit, desist, refrain, abstain, exempt, debar, hinder, prevent ইত্যাদি verb-এর পরে সাধারণত from + gerund (verb-এর present form + ing) বসে। যেমন:
Inc: Mother prohibited me to go out.
Cor: Mother prohibited me from going out.
Inc: They should refrain to do it.
Cor: They should refrain from doing it.
Inc: You can't prevent/debar/hinder/desist me to go there.
Cor: You can't prevent/debar/hinder/desist me from going there.
Inc: They exempted the boy to pay the fine.
Cor: They exempted the boy from paying the fine.
5. Persist, excel, assist, succeed, indulge, right/correct, mistake ইত্যাদি শব্দের পরে সাধারণত in + gerund বসে। যেমন:
Inc: I succeeded to solve the problem.
Cor: I succeeded in solving the problem.
Inc: We should not indulge to smoke.
Cor: We should not indulge in smoking.
Inc: The boy excels to speak English.
Cor: The boy excels in speaking English.
Inc: He was right/mistaken to think so.
Cor: He was right/mistaken in thinking so.
6. সাধারণত with a view to, look forward to, used to (অভ্যস্ত), addicted to ইত্যাদির পরে এবং অন্যান্য preposition-এর পরে verb + ing বসে।
Inc: The man was addicted to gamble.
Cor: The man was addicted to gambling.
Inc: I went to bazaar with a view to buy some vegetables.
Cor: I went to bazaar with a view to buying some vegetables.
Inc: I am looking forward to hear from you.
Cor: I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Inc: He was used to smoke.
Cor: He was used to smoking
Inc: I have no objection to go there.
Cor: I have no objection to going there.
7. Confident, desirous, fond, negligent, capable, despair of ইত্যাদির পরে সাধারণত of + gerund বসে। যেমন:
Inc: We were confident to win the game.
Cor: We were confident of winning the game.
Inc: Mim is fond to read novels.
Cor: Mim is fond of reading novels.
Inc: He was capable to do the work.
Cor: He was pable of doing the work.
Inc: You are negligent to learn your lessons.
Cor: You are negligent of learning your lessons.
8. বিশেষ কিছু verb-এর সাথে adverb-এর ব্যবহার:
Inc: The boy was drowned when he was bathing.
Cor: The boy was drowned while he was bathing. (while continuous tense-এর পূর্বে বসে)
Inc: Where were you while I went?
Cor: Where were you when I went? (when সচরাচর indefinite tense-এর পূর্বে বসে।)
Inc: You should go home directly.
Cor: You should go home direct. (direct - পথে দেরি না করে)
Inc: They distribute books freely (মুক্ত/স্বাধীনভাবে).
Cor: They distribute books free (বিনামূল্যে).
Inc: The boy comes to college lately (সম্প্রতি).
Cor: The boy comes to college late (দেরি করে).
Inc: Bilkis hit the ball hardly (কদাচিত).
Cor: Bilkis hit the ball hard (সজোরে).
9. সাধারণত 'be' verb-এর সঙ্গে due to (জন্য) এবং অন্য verb-এর সঙ্গে owing to (জন্য) বসে।
Inc: The boy succeeded due to hard work. Cor: The boy succeeded owing to hard work.
Inc: The boy was successful owing to hard work.
Cor: The boy was successful due to hard work.
Inc: The steamer service has been cancelled due to fog.
Cor: The steamer service has been cancelled owing to fog.
10. Just, already, recently ইত্যাদি থাকলে সাধারণত present perfect tense হয়।
Inc: I have just have a snack.
Cor: I have just had a snack.
Inc: His father died recently.
Cor: His father has recently died.
11. It is high time-এর পরে subject + verb-এর past form বসে।
Inc: It is high time we go there.
Cor: It is high time we went there.
12. Present tense + since + past indefinite; আবার, past tense + since + past perfect.
Inc: It was long since I see her last.
Cor: It was long since I had seen her last.
Inc: Five years have passed since his father die.
Cor: Five years have passed since his father died.
Inc: It's about a week since I have got your letter.
Cor: It's about a week since I got your letter.
13. Ago, yesterday, last + সময় থাকলে past indefinite tense হয়।
Inc: She has been married long ago.
Cor: She was married long ago.
Inc: He has come here yesterday.
Cor: He came here yesterday
14. Hope, feel, see, love, like ইত্যাদি verb সাধারণত indefinite tense-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Inc: I am hoping for success.
Cor: I hope for success.
Inc: Are you still loving her?
Cor: Do you still love her?
Inc: The book was belonging to me.
Cor: The book belonged to me.
Inc: I am not liking you.
Cor: I don't like you.
15. Agree, appear, arrange, ask, claim, consent, decide, demand, deserve, expect, fail, forget, hesitate, hope, intend, learn, manage, mean, need, offer, plan, prepare, pretend., promise, refuse, want ইত্যাদি verb-গুলোর পরে to + verb-এর base form বসে (gerund বসে না)। যেমন:
Inc: He failed keeping his promise.
Cor: He failed to keep his promise.
Inc: We need learning the point.
Cor: We need to learn the point,
Inc: He refused helping me.
Cor: He refused to help me.
