Clause হলো উপবাকা বা বাক্য বা বাক্যাংশ যাতে একটি subject ও একটি predicate থাকে।
যেমন:
She has worn a chain which is made of gold.
এই বাক্যে দু'টি clause আছে- She has worn a chain এবং which is made of gold.
প্রথম clause-a subject হচ্ছে she এবং predicate হচ্ছে has worn a chain;
পক্ষান্তরে, দ্বিতীয় clause-এ 'which' হলো subject এবং 'is made of gold' হলো predicate.
Predicate-এ সব সময় একটি finite verb থাকে। একটি বাক্যে এক বা একাধিক clause থাকতে পারে। কোন বাক্যে দুটি finite verb থাকলে তাতে অবশ্যই দুটি clause থাকবে, clause দুটি যুক্ত থাকবে coordinating বা subordinating conjunction দ্বারা।
Coordinating conjunction একাধিক main বা principal বা independent clause-কে সংযুক্ত করে যার ফলে কোন compound sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য) গঠিত হয়।
Subordinating conjunction একটি main clause এবং এক বা একাধিক dependent clause-কে সংযুক্ত করে যার ফলে কোন complex sentence ( বাক্য) গঠিত হয়।
আমরা নিচের বাক্যগুলো লক্ষ করি:
The clock struck five and we started our journey. (Compound sentence)
When the clock struck five, we started our journey. (Complex sentence)
উপরে Compound sentence-টিতে 'The clock struck five' এবং 'we started our journey' independent clause.
অন্যদিকে complex sentence-টিতে 'When the clock struck five' হলো dependent clause এবং 'we started our journey' main clause.
Subordinating conjunction দ্বারা যে clause-এর সূচনা ঘটে তাকে বলা হয় subordinate clause বা dependent clause.
Dependent clause তিন প্রকার হয়:
নিচের বাক্যগুলোতে বাঁকা হরফে প্রদত্ত শব্দগুচ্ছ বিভিন্ন dependent clause (এদের শ্রেণী পরিচয় লক্ষ কর):
I think that you have made a mistake. (Noun clause)
People who pay their debts are trusted. (Adjective clause)
We cannot start while it is raining. (Adverb clause)
