Dependent clause-এর verb-এর tense অবশ্যই principal clause-এর verb-এর tense-এর সাথে সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ হতে হবে।
Rule # 1
Principal clause-এর verb present কিংবা future tense-এ থাকলে dependent clause-এর verb ইচ্ছানুসারে যে কোনো tense-এ থাকতে পারে।
He says that he is fine.
He says that he will be fine.
He will say that he was fine.
He says that he was fine.
He will say that he is fine.
He will say that he will be fine.
Rule # 2
Principal clause-এর verb past tense-এ থাকলে dependent clause-এর verb ইচ্ছানুসারে সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ যে কোনো past tense-এ থাকবে।
He said that he would come.
He told me that he had been ill.
I knew that he would not pass.
We noticed that the fan had stopped.
এই নিয়মটির কিছু ব্যতিক্রম রয়েছে।
● dependent clause-এ চিরন্তন সত্য প্রকাশিত হলে principal clause past tense-এ থাকা সত্ত্বেও dependent clause present tense-এ থাকবে।
Copernicus proved that the earth moves round the sun.
The teacher told us that honesty is the best policy.
● dependent clause কারণ কিংবা তুলনা প্রকাশ করলে তা অর্থানুসারে যে কোনো tense-এ থাকতে পারে।
He didn't get the job because his English isn't good.
He used to study more than he does now.
● dependent clause-টি adjective cluase হলে তা অর্থানুসারে যে কোনো tense-এ থাকতে পারে।
Yesterday I met a man who sells balloons. Yesterday I met a man who sold me a balloon.
Rule # 3
Clause of time (clauses beginning with when, until, before, after etc.)-এ future tense ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
I will call you when dinner is ready. (NOT I will call you when dinner will be ready.)
I shall wait until you return. (NOT I shall wait until you will return.)
[Note: সহজ ভাষায় বলতে গেলে বলা যায়- দুটি ভবিষ্যৎ কালের কাজ when, as soon as, unless, until, in case দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে এদের পরের অংশটি present indefinite এবং অপর অংশটি future indefinite হয়।]
