Differences Between Words

1. BREAK OUT : (v.) appear suddenly. Cholera has broken out in the town.

OUTBREAK : (n.) sudden appearance. There was an outbreak of cholera in the town.


2. BURST OUT : (v.) ফাটিয়া পড়া. She burst out weeping. 

OUTBURST : (n.) উচ্ছাস. His outburst of passion shocked me. 


3. CAST DOWN: (v.) (i) turned downward. She cast down her eyes at the mention of her husband's name. (ii) depressed. He was cast down by his failure. 

DOWN CAST : (adj.) depressed. His down cast mood proves that he has failed.


4. CAST OUT: (v) বিতাড়িত করা. He was cast out from society. 

OUTCAST : (n.) সমাজচ্যুত. He is an outcast in society.


5. COME IN : (v.) enter. He asked me to come in. 

INCOME: (n.) revenue. What is your income?


6. COME OUT : (v.) appear. The secret has come out (বের হওযা). 

OUTCOME : (n.) the issue ; result. His criticism is the outcome of his jealousy (ফল, পরিণাম). 


7. COME OVER : (v.) change one side for another ; to befall. Some fifty enemy soldiers came over to our side. A great change came over him after his son's death.

OVERCOME : ( a). He overcame all the difficulties. 


8. CRY OUT : (v.) shout. The man cried out in pain.

OUTCRY : (n.) a confused noise. They raised an outcry (হৈ চৈ). 


9. FALL DOWN: (v.) He fell down from his horse. 

DOWNFALL : (n.) ruin. His downfall (পতন) is very near.

10. FIT OUT : (v.) furnish. The ship has been fitted out for the Voyage (সাজান).

OUTFIT : (n.) complete equipment. The outfit for the journey will cost me much. (সাজ সরঞ্জাম)


11. GROW OUT : result from. Anarchy grows out of discontent. 

OUTGROW : surpass in growth. This tree has outgrown all other trees in the garden (বাড়িয়া ছাড়াইয়া যাওয়া);


12. HoLD UP : (রক্ষা করা, তুলিয়া ধরা), He tried to hold up the prestige of the family. Hold up your hand.

UPHOLD : sustain. He upheld the honour of his family (বজায় রাখা). 


13. HOLD WITH : agree with. I hold with you on this point.

WITHHOLD : His promotion was withheld (ঠেকিয়ে রাখা).


14. HOLIDAY : à day of recreation. Tomorrow is a holiday. 

HOLY DAY: a sacred day. December 25 is a holy day to the Christians. 


15. KEEP UP : (v.) retain. Keep up your spirits (বজায় রাখা). 

UPKEEP : (n.) maintenance. He gave his all for the upkeep of the hospital. 


16. LAY OUT: (v.) expand ; spread for inspection. He laid out his all in business. He laid out the papers on the table.

OUTLAY : (n.) expenditure. The total capital outlay of the firm is about fifty thousand rupees (খরচ).


17. LET IN : (v.) admit. He refused to let me in 

INLET : (n.) the passage by which something is let in. Nostrils are the inlets of fresh air from outside (প্রবেশপথ).


18. LET OUT : (v.) divulge. He has let out the secret (প্রকাশ করা). 

OUTLET : (n.) the passage to let out something. The water of the tank flowed out through this outlet (নির্গম পথ).


19. LOOK OUT : (v.) watch. The eagle is looking out for his prey. 

OUTLOOK : (n.) prospect. The outlook of crop this year is gloomy (ভবিষ্যৎ সম্ভাবনা). Don't have a narrow outlook ( দৃষ্টিভঙ্গী) on any matter.


20. LOOK OVER : (পরীক্ষা করা). He looked over the answer paper. 

OVERLOOK : ( a ). He overlooked my claim. 


21. A NOBLE MAN : a man of noble character, whatever his rank may be. Though poor, he is a noble man. 

A NOBLEMAN : a man of noble birth or rank. All the noblemen of the tow were present there (সম্ভ্রান্ত বংশের লোক).


22. POUR DOWN : (v.) Tears poured down his cheeks.

DOWNPOUR : (n.) a heavy fall of rain. There was a heavy down pour for one hour (প্রবল বৃষ্টিপাত).


23. Power OVER : I have no power over him.

OVERPOWER : subdue. The thief offered resistance, but was soon overpowered (পরাজিত করা).


24. PUT OUT : (v.) extinguish. Put out the lamp (নিভিয়ে দেওয়া). 

OUTPUT: (n.) production. What is the output of the mi (উৎপাদন) ?


25. RULE OVER : He ruled over the country wisely. 

OVERRULE : The president overruled (বাতিল করা) the objection. 


26. RUN OUT: be exhausted. Our provisions ran out (নিঃশেষ হওয়া)

OUTRUN : exceed. The expenditure outrun (মাত্রাধিক হওয়া) the estimate.


27. RUN OVER : A child was run over by a motor car.

OVERRUN : The invaders overrun the country (লুটপাট করা). The garden was overrun with weeds (ছড়াইয়া পড়িয়া ঢাকিয়া ফেলা). 


28. SET ON: (i) লেলিয়ে দেওয়া. This wicked boy set his dog on me.

(ii) apply earnestly. He set his heart on the task. 

ONSET : The enemy could not withstand the onset (a violent attack) of our cavalry. With the onset (আরম্ভ) of monsoon, the weather improved.


29. SET OUT : start. He has set out on his travels (যাত্রা করা). 

OUTSET : beginning. I warn you at the outset (যাত্রা করা). 


30. SET UP : establish. He set up a school there.

UPSET : (i) (উল্টাইয়া ঢ
ফেলা). A cat upset the cup of milk. (ii)(বিপর্য স্ত বা বিচলিত করা). The news upset me. 


31. SHOOT OFF : run fast. The dog shot off like an arrow.

OFFSHOOT : branch. What are the offshoots of the Bahamani kingdom (প্রশাখা)?


32. SHOOT UP : rise upwards. The rocket shot up into the sky. 

UPSHOT : final issue ; end. I am very eager to know the upshot of the whole affair (পরিণাম).


33. STAND WITH: be consistent with. Your argument does not stand with reason (সামঞ্জস্য রক্ষা করা). 

WITHSTAND: oppose successfully. They could not withstand our attack (বাধা দেওয়া).


34. TAKE OVER : accept. The new Headmaster took over charge on Saturday last.

OVERTAKE : catch up. The dog soon overtook the fox (নাগাল পাওয়া).


35. THROW OVER : abandon. My friends threw me over (বর্জন করা). 

OVERTHROW : The King was overthrown (ক্ষমতাচ্যুত করা) by the army.


36. TURN OUT : (i) expel. The boy was turned out of the class for misconduct. (ii) prove. The man turned out to be a thief. (ii) produce. The mill tums out plenty of cloth every day. 

OUTTURN : (উৎপন্ন দ্রব্য ). What is the outturn of this mill ?
