Difference Between Words

1. ACCEDE : consent. I cannot accede to your request (রাজী হওয়া)

EXCEED : surpass. My expenditure exceeds my income.

2. ACCESS : entrance (প্রবেশ). He is easy of access.

EXCESS : more than enough. Excess of anything is bad

3. ADAPT : to fit one thing to another. We should adapt (খাপ খাওয়ানো) ourselves to changing circumstances.

ADEPT : skilful hand. He is an adept (দক্ষ) in painting.

*ADOPT : take up. He adopted my plan (গ্রহণ করা ).

4. ADVICE : You should follow your teacher's advice (n.)

ADVISE: The doctor advised (v.) the patient to take rest.

5. AFFECT (i) This will affect (attack) his health. (ii) He affected ignorance (to feign).

EFFECT : (i) He effected (accomplished) many reforms. (ii) What will be the effect of this (result) ?

6. AFFLICT: to trouble. He was afflicted (দুর্দশাগ্রস্থ) with misfortune.

INFLICT : to impose. A heavy fine was inflicted on him (আরোপ করা).

7. ALLUSION : Explain the allusion in the passage (পরোক্ষভাবে উল্লিখিত বিষয়).

ILLUSION : deception. The world is an illusion (মায়া).

8. ALTAR : Offerings were placed on the altar (বেদী).

ALTER : He has altered (changed) the plan.

9. ALTERATION : change. I noticed no alteration there (পরিবর্তন).

ALTERCATION : quarrel. What is the altercation about (বিবাদ)?

10. ALTERNATE : coming by turns. He comes here on alternate days (একদিন পর একদিন),

ALTERNATIVE : a choice between two things. This question is alternative to that (বিকল্প).

11. AMEND : make or become better. He will have to amend his style of writing, if he wants to be successful.

EMEND : take out mistakes from. I requested him to emend the passage if necessary.

12. AMIABLE : good-tempered, kind-hearted. I have always found him a most amiable (সহোদয়) fellow.

AMICABLE : done in a friendly way. We arrived at an amicable (সদ্ভাবপূর্ণ) settlement.

13. ANTIC: odd. He was laughed at for his antic gesture (বিদঘুটে).

ANTIQUE : old-fashioned. His clothes were antique (সেকেলে).

14. APPOSITE: suitable. The example was apposite to the case (সঠিক).

OPPOSITE : His house is just opposite to mine (বিপরীত).

15. APPRAISE : to estimate, to form a judgement about. He correctly appraised the ability of the candidate (মূল্য বা গুণের নিরূপণ করা).

APPRISE : inform. I apprised him of the correct situation (জানান).

16. ARTFUL: clever, crafty. He is an artful magician (চতুর).

ARTIFICIAL : This an artificial ruby (কৃত্রিম).

17. ASCENT : going up. The plane is on the ascent (উর্দ্ধগমন).

ASSENT : agreement. I gave my assent to the plan (সম্মতি).

18. ASSAY: attempt (চেষ্টা করা). The child assayed to walk.

19. BAIL : security. He stood bail for me

BALE : bundle of goods. Many bales of jute were destroyed by fire (বাণ্ডিল).

20. BARBARISM : uncultured state. The country was then in a state of barbarism.

BARBARITY : savage cruelty. The king was hated for his acts of barbarity.

BARBARIAN : (as adj.)-an attributive use of the noun barbarian. (অসভ্য জাতির লোক). The sights of London charmed the barbarian king (king of the barbarians). It is a barbarian (found among the barbarians) custom.

BARBARIC : used in a favourable sense (rough, uncultured, etc.).

The zemindar's palace was full of barbaric grandeur.

BARBAROUS : uncivilised. The country was then in a barbarous state.

21. BENEFICIAL : useful. Exercise is beneficial to health (উপকারী).

BENEFICENT : doing good. The beneficent (পরোপকারী) zemindar donated Rs. 500 to the Relief Fund.

22. BIANNUAL : (twice in every year). It is a biannual magazine (বছরে দুইবার).

BIENNIAL : (once in every two years). Our company gives biennial leave travel concession (দুই বছরে একবার).

23. BIRTH : She gave birth to a male child (জন্ম).

BERTH : a sleeping place in a train or ship. I have reserved a sleeping berth (ট্রেনে বা জাহাজে শােবার জায়গা).

24. BONA FIDE : (adv., adj.). in good faith, sincere. You attend to the bona fide buyers. We received a large number of bona fide enquiries.

BONA FIDES : (noun). hönest intention. His bond fides (sing) is in doubts

25. BORN: given birth to. He was born in a rich family.

BORNE : carried. The child was borne on the shoulder.

26. CANON : rule. Follow the canons of morality.

CANNON : a gun. They were killed by cannon fire.

27. CANVAS : a kind of coarse cloth. I bought a canvas bag.

CANVASS : seek. I am canvassing votes for my friend.

28. CAREER : He had a bright academic career (জীবনপথ).

CARRIER : I have bought a tiffin carrier (বহনকারী).

29. CARVE : to cut a figure into ,or out of, wood, etc. He carved the image out of stone (খােদাই করা).

CURVE : bend: I saw him at the curve of the road (বাঁক).

30. CAST : He cast me out. The cast of his head is good.

CASTE : What caste are you ?

31. CASUAL: occasional. I had 5 days' casual leave.

CAUSAL : relating to cause. Give the causal form of 'fall'.

32. CENSOR (v.): to exercise censorship. The book is censored in India.

CENSURE (v.) : to criticise unfavourably reprove (ভৎসনা করা). He was censured for neglecting his duties.

33. CEREMONIOUS: implies an excess of formality. His greeting was too ceremonious (অতিশয় শিষ্টাচারপূর্ণ).

CEREMONIAL : relating to a ceremony. Christmas is a ceremonial occasion (উৎসব-সংক্রান্ত, আনুষ্ঠানিক).

34. CHILDISH, CHILDLIKE : Applied to grown-up men, childish refers to the bad points of a child ; childlike childish conduct disgusted us all. His childlike simplicity charmed us all.

CHECK : control. Check your passion (সংযত করা).

38. COLLISION: violent clash. Fifty men were killed by the railway collision (সংঘর্ষ).

COLLUSION: secret agreement. The thief acted in collusion with a servant (যোগসাজস).

39. COMA: stupor. The patient is in a state of a coma now.

COMMA : Put a comma here.

40. COMPLEMENT : that which completes. To be' verbs usually require a complement after them.

COMPLIMENT : regard. Tender my compliments to him.

41. COMPOSURE : calmness. He bore all with composure.

COMPOSITION : This is a book on English composition.

42. COMPREHENSIVE : extensive. The word is used here in a comprehensive sense (ব্যাপক),

COMPREHENSIBLE : capable of being understood. Your conduct is not at all comprehensible (বোধগম্য).

43. CONFIDANT : (noun ) one who is trusted with confidence. I have told the secret to my confidant (যাহাকে বিশ্বাস করে কিছু বলা যায়),

CONFIDENT : (adj.) hopeful. I am confident of success.

44. CONFORM: comply with generally accepted standard. You should conform to the rules of the club if you wart to retain its membership.

CONFIRM : make firmer or stronger. Please confirm the appointment by a letter.

45. CONSCIOUS : aware. I am conscious of my defects

CONSCIENTIOUS: scrupulous. He is a conscientious worker (বিবেকবান),

CONSENSUS : unanimity. There is a consensus of opinion in support of the bill (একমত).

46. CONSIDERATE : mindful of the feeling of others. He is very considerate to his men (বিবেচক).

CONSIDERABLE : pretty large. He lost a considerable sum of money (যথেষ্ট).

47. CONTAGIOUS: growing or spreading by contagion. Small-pox is a contagious disease (সংক্রামক).

CONTIGUOUS : adjacent. His house is contiguous to mine (সংলয়).

48. CONTEMPTIBLE : worthy of contempt. He is a contemptible fellow (ঘৃণ্য).

CONTEMPTUOUS: scornful. He treated me contemptuously (ঘুণাব্যজক).

49. CORD : rope. Cut the cord with a knife.

CHORD : a straight line joining two points in a circle. The perpendicular from the centre bisects the chord.

50. CORPORAL : relating to the body as a whole. I do not like corporal punishment  (দৈহিক).

CORPOREAL : opposed to spiritual; material. A hermit does not care for corporeal affairs (জৈব, পার্থিব).

51. CORPS : (pronounced as core) a division of an army. An army corps was sent against the enemy.

CORPSE : the dead body of a human being. The battlefield was covered with corpses (মানুষের মৃতদেহ).

CROPS : food-grains (pl. of crop). Crops are gathered in autumn (শস্যাদি)

52. COUNCIL : an assembly. He is a member of this Council.

COUNSEL : (i) advice. I accept your counsel. (ii) An adviser, particularly a legal one. He is an eminent counsel.

53. COURTESY: He treated me with courtesy (সৌজন্য).

CURTSEY, CURTSY : They curtseyed (or, curtsied) to the chief when he entered the room (saluted by lowering their bodies and bending their knees).

54. CREDIBLE: believable. Your story is not credible.

CREDULOUS : easy of belief. He is credulous by nature ( n). 55. DEARNESS : high price. They were given a dearness allowance of Rs. 3000 per month (কান পাতলা).

DEARTH : scarcity. There is no dearth of candidates (অভাব).

DESCENT : downward motion. The plane is on the descent.

DISSENT : disagree. I dissent from you (ভিন্নমত হওয়া).

DECEPTIVE: Appearances are sometimes deceptive (misleading).

58. DECIDED : about which there is no doubt. It is a decided victory for his party.

DECISIVE: that decides an issue (চূড়ান্ত). A decisive battle was fought between the parties. A decided victory is one about which there is no doubt, but a decisive victory is one that ends the contest.

59. DEFACE : disfigure. The picture was defaced by ink.

EFFACE : rub out completely. I cannot efface his memory from my mind

60. DEFERENCE : respect. Treat your elders with deference.

DEPENDENT : (adj.). He is dependent on me (Fra).

67. DEPENDENCE : reliance. Dependence on God gives peace of mind (আশ্রিত লোক).

DEPENDENCY : a subject country. India is no longer a dependency of England.

68. DEPOSITARY : a person with whom a thing is deposited. He is the depositary of my private papers.

DEPOSITORY : a place where a thing is left. This drawer is the depository of my private letters.

DISPOSITION : He has a mild disposition(মেজাজ).

70. DEPRECATE : ondemn. He deprecated my conduct.

71. DESTINY : fate. No one can escape his destiny (অদৃষ্ট).

DESTINATION : goal. He reached his destination safely.

73. DISINTERESTED : not influenced by self-interest or partiality. He served the club disinterestedly.

UNINTERESTED : not taking any interest. I am uninterested in this match

74. DISEASE : illness. He has been cured of his disease.

DECEASE: death. I know the time of his decease.

75. DISTINCTION : What is the distinction between the two ? He passed with distinction (honour).

DISTINCTNESS : clearness. Distinctness of speech is essential to a teacher.

DIVERSE : different. They fled in diverse directions (বিভিন্ন).

77. DRAFT : Make a draft (খসড়া) of the petition. The bank honoured his draft (drawing of money by written order),

DRAUGHT : the quantity drunk, or act drinking. He emptied the glass at a single draught.

DROUGHT : want of rain. Drought destroyed the crops.

150. OFFICIAL : (i) (n.) one in office. He is a high official (উচ্চ কর্মচারী) here. (ii) relating to office. He gave out official secrets.

OFFICIOUS : too forward in offering services. His pride was touched by your officious offer of help (গায়ে পড়িয়া দেওয়া,অযাচিত, অবাঞ্ছিত).

151. ORDINANCE : The Governor issued a new ordinance (জরুরী আইন).

ORDNANCE : guns and army stores. He works in an ordnance factory (গোলাগুলি).

152. PARSON : clergyman. The parish has a kind parson (পাদ্রী).

PERSON : He is an honest person.

153. PATROL : go round or up and down. The military is patrolling the streets (টহল দেওয়া).

PETROL : I have no petrol for my car.

154. PERSECUTE : harass. The creditors persecuted him.

PROSECUTE : proceed against judicially. He was prosecuted for theft.

155. PERSONALITY : a distinctive character. He is a man of personality (ব্যক্তিত্ব),

PERSONALTY : property. He has sold his personalty (ব্যক্তিগত সম্পত্তি).

156. PERSONATE : claim to be another man to deceive. He was arrested for having personated another voter (নিজেকে অপর লােক বলিয়া চালানো).

PERSONIFY : to speak of a quality as if it were a person. Mercy is personified in "Come, Mercy, come to our hearts."

157. PERSONAL : relating to a person or the body. This is my personal affair (ব্যক্তিগত),

PERSONNEL : persons employed in a business. The personnel of the committee have been announced.

158. PERSUADE : to influence by argument. I persuaded him to come (প্ররােচিত করা).

PURSUED : chased. We pursued the enemy (পশ্চাদ্বাবন করা).

159. PHYSIC : medicine. Physic alone will do him no good (ঔষধ).

PHYSIQUE : bodily constitution. He has a good physique (দেহের গড়ন),

PHYSICS : I have taken up Honours in physics.

160. PHYSICIST : He is an eminent physicist.

PHYSICIAN : He is a good physician (চিকিৎসক).

161. PIETY : piousness. He is respected for his piety (ধর্মভাব),

Pity: compassion. Have pity for the poor.

1.2. PITIFUL, PITIABLE, PITIOUS : His pitiful (দয়ালু) nature could not bear the sight of my pitiable (শোচনীয়) conditions. Pitious (করুণ) groans were heard there.

PLAIN : (i) simple. His motto is plain living and high thinking. (ii) A flat country. Hill men are generally stronger than men in the plains.

PLANE: a geometrical surface. Only one circle can pass through three points in the same plane.

164. POLE: stick. The calf was tied to a pole.

POLL : voting at election. He got the largest number of votes at the poll.

165. POLITIC : It is not politic (wise) for us to oppose him.

POLITICS : He has given up politics.

166. POPULATION : What is the population of India?

POPULACE : The populace (জনসাধারণ) asked for food.

POPULOUS : full of people. Calcutta is a populous city

POPULAR : He is a popular teacher

167. PRACTICAL : opposed to theoretical. He has no practical teaching experience (ব্যবহারিক),

PRACTICABLE : possible. Give your answers in your own words as far as practicable (সম্ভাব্য).

168. PRAY : Let us pray to God.

PREY : The tiger is a beast of prey (শিকার).

169. PRECEDE : go before. A band party preceded the procession

PROCEED: advance. Don't proceed any farther.

170. PRECEDENT : a parallel case in the past. The chairman's ruling is without any precedent (নজীর)

PRESIDENT : chairman. He was elected president.

171. PRESCRIBE: advise, order the use of. The doctor prescribed the patient a long rest,

PROSCRIBE : denounced as dangerous. The convict, who escaped from the prison, was proscribed by the police.

172. PRIMARY : This is a primary school.

PRIMITIVE : Their manners are primitive (of an early, undeveloped kind, সেকেলে).

173. PRINCIPAL : chief. Who is the Principal of your college? My principal objection is this.

PRINCIPLE: a settled rule of action, মূলনীতি. He is a man of principle.

174. PROPERTY : He manages his own property (সম্পত্তি).

PROPRIETY : correctness. I question the propriety of your conduct (ঔচিত্য).

175. QUIET : Be quiet (calm).

QUITE : He is quite (fully) happy.

176. REGISTER : His name has been struck off the register.

REGISTRAR : one who keeps a register. I have applied to the Registrar for the purpose.

177. REGRETFUL : feeling regret (of person or mood). He is regretful for his rudeness.

REGRETTABLE : deserving censure (generally, of conduct or event). He is sorry, for his regrettable conduct (নিন্দনীয়).

178. RESPECTABLE : worthy of respect. He is a respectable gentleman (সম্মানাহ).

RESPECTFUL : full of respect. Be respectful (সম্ভূমপূর্ণ) to your superiors.

RESPECTIVE : relating to cach. The teachers went to their respective classes (নিজ নিজ).

179. REFUSE : He refused to go (অস্বীকার করিল).

REFUGE : He gave me refuge (shelter, আশ্রয়) for the night.

180. REVEREND : deserving reverence. The reverend clergyman took the poor boy to his own house (সম্মানার্হ).

REVERENT : showing reverence. Be reverent in your attitude towards your elders (সম্মানসূচক).

181. RIGHT : Might is right. This is my right hand.

RITE : The funeral rites (ceremonies) have been finished.

182. RIOT : tumult. There was a riot in the street (মারামারি).

RYOT : a tenant. The ryots of Bengal are poor (রাইয়ত).

183. ROUT: (v) disperse. The enemy we routed (বিচ্ছিন্ন করা).

ROUTE : (n) way. I came here by a new route.

184. SANATORY : conducive to health. Sanatory rules should be strictly observed in a sick-room (স্বাস্থ্যপ্রদ).

SANITARY : has the general meaning of about health'. The sanitary condition of the place is bad (স্বাস্থ্য সম্বন্ধীয়).

185. SANGUINE : hopeful. I am sanguine of success (আশান্বিত).

SANGUINARY : bloody. It was a sanguinary battle (রক্তক্ষয়ী).

186. SEPTIC: If you don't take care of this wound, it may turn septic.

SCEPTIC : (doubtful). I am rather sceptic of his claim that he is a graduate.

187. SEIZE : They seized (caught) the thief (ধরিল).

SIEGE : We laid siege to the city (অবরোধ).

188. SENSIBLE : wise. He is a sensible person (বুদ্ধিমান).

SENSITIVE : easily affected by outside impressions. The boy is very sensitive to criticism (অভিমানী, তীব্র অনুভূতি সম্পন্ন).

SENSUAL : used in a bad sense. He is given to sensual pleasures (ইন্দ্রিয় সুখ সংক্রান্ত),

SENSUOUS : easily affected through the medium of the senses (not in a bad sense). Keats was a sensuous poet.

189. Sew  (সেলাই করা): I have a sewing machine.

Sow: Sow the seeds carefully.

190. SOCIAL : used in the general sense of relating to society. He is a social reformer.

SOCIABLE: fond of society or aggreable in company. He is a sociable gentleman (মিশুক).

191. SOLE : (i) I am the sole (only) owner of this firm. (ii) The sole of your shoe is very thin (bottom of the shoe).

SOUL : The soul is immortal.

192. SORE : wound. I am suffering from sore throat (ক্ষত).

SOAR : The plane soared (rose) up into the sky (উর্দ্ধে উঠা).

193. SPIRITUAL : opposed to material. The Pope is the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Chruch (আধ্যাত্মিক).

SPIRITUOUS : containing alcohol. Spirituous drugs should be avoided (সুরাসার বিশিষ্ট).

194. STATIONARY : fixed. The earth is not stationary (স্থির).

STATIONERY : He deals in stationery (paper, pens, etc., লেখার সাজ সরঞ্জাম).

195. STATUE : an image carved out of stone or marble. There are many statues in the Maidan (প্রতিমূর্তি).

STATUTE : à written law. India is governed mainly statute laws (লিখিত আইন).

196. STUFF: What stuff (material, tar) is it made of?

STAFF : The teaching staff was present there (কোনো প্রতিষ্ঠানের লোকজন) The old man leaned on his staff (যষ্ঠি).

197. SUCCESSFUL : He was successful in his attempt.

SUCCESSIVE : following in order. Give the names of the Vice roys of India in their successive order (পর্যায়ক্রমে).

SUITE : (pronounced as sweet) retinue ; set of rooms etc. The prince and his suite (অনুচরণ) arrived at 2 p.m. He has rented this suite of rooms.

199. SERGEANT : a police or military officer. A sergeant is patrolling the streets.

SURGEON : one who treats diseases by operation. He is a very good surgeon (শল্যবিদ).

200. TAMPER : to meddle. Who tampered (গোপনে হস্তক্ষেপ করা) with my letters?

TEMPER : disposition. He has a good temper (মেজাজ).

201. TASTEFUL : having good taste (used to describe people). She is very tasteful in her dresses.

TASTY : used to describe food. This curry is very tasty.

202. TEMPORAL : earthly, opposed to spiritual. I do not care for temporal affairs (পার্থিব).

TEMPORARY : short-lived. It is a temporary post (অস্থায়ী).

203. TRANSITORY : short-lived. Life is transitory.

TRANSIENT : quickly passing away, generally refers to the affairs and feeling of man. It made a transient impression upon my mind.

204. TREATIES : plural of 'treaty'. Treaties are now regarded as mere scraps of paper.

TREATISE : a composition. His treatise (প্রবন্ধ, নিবন্ধ) on education has gained him much popularity.

205. UNION : combination. Union is strength.

UNITY : oneness. I believe in the unity of God (একত্ব).

UNISON : harmony. The voice of the girl is in unison with the note of the piano (মিল, সংগতি).

206. UN-CHRISTIAN : Christian in religion, but not in conduct. The Pope punished him for his un-Christian conduct.

NON-CHRISTIAN : not a Christian in religion. Non-Christians were not allowed to enter the Church. Cf. Non-Hindu, un- Hindu, Non-Mussalman, un-Mussalman.

207. URBAN : opposed to rural. The rural population of Bengal exceeds the urban population.

URBANE : His urbane (polite) manners pleased us all.

208. VAIN : (i) fruitless. He tried in vain. (ii) proud. She is a vain girl.

VANE : weather-cock. He reached the vane of the temple.

VEIN : (1) the vessel that returns blood to the heart. In making the operation, he cut a vein. (ii) He spoke many things in - lighter vein (way).

209. VARIANCE : disagreement. Your deeds are at variance with your words (পার্থক্য).

VARIATION : change. There is no variation in temperature.

210. VERBAL: oral. I cannot carry out your verbal orders (মৌখিক).

VERBOSE : too full of words. He writes in a verbose style.

211 WAVE : (i) The boat is tossing on the wave. (ii) to move. The branch is waving in the breeze.

WAIVE: to give up. I waive my claim in your favour (ত্যাগ করা)

212. WEAK : He is too weak to walk (দুর্বল).

WEEK : A week has seven days.

213. WEATHER: The weather is bad (আবহওয়া).

WHETHER : I want to know whether (if) this is right.

214. WILFUL : ইচ্ছাকৃত : He was punished for wilful neglect of duty. (Wilful murder ; wilful waste).

WILLING: I am willing to go there (ইচ্ছুক).
