DETERMINERS

1. All is a boy.

2. The cow is useful to us.

3. I need three books.

4. This is our college.

5. I have a few friends.

6. I have little rice.

The words which specify a noun by making it definite, indefinite, or by indicating quantity are called determiners.


Determiners can be used in seven ways:

1. Before a Singular Countable Noun: I have a pen.

2. Before a Plural Countable Noun: I have two pens.

3. Before Uncountable Noun: I have little rice.

4. One ---> Singular Countable Noun:
 I want to take some pens. Take any one you like. 

5. Ones ---> Plural Countable Noun:
I want to take some pens. Take any ones you like. 

6. As Pronoun: I have not any pen.

7. As Predeterminer: I have not gone through any of these novels yet.

Note: Deterniner isn't used before Proper Noun.



List of Important Determiners:

i. Articles: a, an, the.

ii. Demonstratives: this, these, that, those.

iii. Possessives: my, our, your, their, his, her its, Romance.

iv. Quantifiers: some, any, no, every, either, neither, each, enough, much, a lot of, little, much, more, less most many, few, several, a great number, plenty of, a good deal of, a great deal of, a great amount of, a lot of, lots of, a good/great many.

v. Cardinal Numerals: one, two, three, four, five South

vi. Ordinal Numeral: first, second, third Zoo

vii. General Ordinals: next, last, other, the other, another, further.

viii. Wh Determiners: what, which, whose, whatever, whichever.



Determiners according to Nouns:

1. Before Singular Countable Noun: a, all, any, a certain, each, either neither, every, the first, the second, the last, half, (the) least, many a, my, your, etc. the next, no, one, the only, another, other, the same, some, such a, that, the, this, the very, what, which, whose, zero

Examples:

a boy, an egg, the man, all day, any book, either pen, neither pen each boy, every girl, the firstman, the second woman, the least thing, my/his/her/ pen, no man, the only man, the other student the same book, such a man, this/that tree, the very man, what/which girl. whose toy, zero grown/ population/output.

* Some ---> Noun

I shall meet you some day next week.

Some man is waiting for you at the door 


2. Before Plural Countable Noun: all, any, both certain, enough, few, a few, fewer, fewest, the first, the second, the last, half, a lot of lots of, many, a good/great many, more, most, minelyour etc. the next, no, a (great) number of, only the only, other (indefinite) the other (plural) plenty of the same, several, some, such, the, these, those, the very, what, which, whose zero.

Examples: all boys, any books, both girls, certain men, enough pens, (a) few students, fewer/fewest teachers, the first the second the last players, half the mangoes, a lot of toys, lots of toys, many books, a good many/a great many men, more students, most students my/his/her/your etc. pens, the next houses, no men, a (great) number of women, the only men, other men, the other men, plenty of apples, the same men, several teachers, some girls, such men, the men, these pencils, those pencils, the very persons, what men, which men, whose toys, zero men.

* the only = We were the only people there.

* Only = Only children are sometimes spoilt.


3. Before Uncountable Noun: all, a great amount of, any, a good/great deal of, enough, half, (the) least, less. (a) little, a lot of, lots of, more, most, much, my/your/her/his, etc. no, the only, other, the other, plenty of the same, some, such, that, the, these, the very, what, which, whose, zeor,

Examples: all rice, a great amount of bread, any cake, a good/a great deal of rice, enough rice, half the rice, the (least) rice, less bread, (a) little rice, a lot of tea, lots of wheat, more/most/much bread, my/your/his/her etc. rice no rice, the only cake, the other bread, plenty of rice, the same bread, some bread, such information, the bread, this tea, the very rice, what rice, which rice, whose rice, zero bread.

** Definite Article "the" is also used as Determiner.

16. Only the graduates should apply.

18. The market is half a mile from my residence.

19. This is the same pen as want.

20. He has a lot of money.

21. He spent a great deal of money of the occasion on his birth day.

22. Neither of the boys did the work.

23. Whose pen did you borrow?

24. What a fine bird it is!

25. How sweetly the cuckoo sings!
