Gerund vs Participle vs Infinitive

In English grammar, "gerund," "participle," and "infinitive" are three different concepts related to verb forms.

1. Gerund:
A gerund is a verb form ending in "-ing" that functions as a noun. It is derived from a verb but acts as a noun in a sentence. Gerunds can be used as subjects, objects, or complements in a sentence.

Example:
- Swimming is good exercise. (Here, "swimming" is a gerund and functions as the subject of the sentence.)

2. Participle:
A participle is a verb form that typically ends in "-ing" (present participle) or "-ed" (past participle). Participles are used as adjectives to modify nouns in a sentence.

Example:
- The running water is refreshing. (Here, "running" is a present participle, and it modifies the noun "water.")

- The broken window needs to be fixed. (Here, "broken" is a past participle, and it modifies the noun "window.")

3. Infinitive:
An infinitive is the base form of a verb, often preceded by the word "to." It can function as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb in a sentence.

Example:
- I like to dance. (Here, "to dance" is an infinitive and functions as the direct object of the verb "like.")

- She gave me a book to read. (Here, "to read" is an infinitive and functions as an adjective, modifying the noun "book.")

In summary, "gerund" is a verb form ending in "-ing" that acts as a noun, "participle" is a verb form (ending in "-ing" or "-ed") used as an adjective, and "infinitive" is the base form of a verb, often preceded by "to," used in various functions within a sentence.
