Common Noun vs Collective Noun

Common noun and collective noun are two different types of nouns used in English grammar.

1. Common Noun:
A common noun is a type of noun that refers to a general, non-specific person, place, thing, or idea. It does not refer to any particular individual or entity. Common nouns are not capitalized unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence.

Examples of common nouns:
- boy
- city
- car
- book
- dog
- tree

In these examples, "boy" refers to any boy, "city" refers to any city, "car" refers to any car, and so on. Common nouns are the opposite of proper nouns, which refer to specific, unique individuals or entities and are always capitalized.

2. Collective Noun:
A collective noun is a type of noun that refers to a group of people, animals, or things as a single entity. It represents a collection or unit of individuals or items. Collective nouns are used to describe groups, but they are singular in form, even though they may refer to multiple members.

Examples of collective nouns:
- team (referring to a group of players)
- herd (referring to a group of cattle)
- flock (referring to a group of birds)
- family (referring to a group of relatives)
- audience (referring to a group of spectators)

In these examples, "team" represents a group of players as a single entity, "herd" represents a group of cattle, and so on.

It's essential to distinguish between common nouns and collective nouns, as they serve different purposes in sentences. Common nouns refer to general entities, while collective nouns represent groups or collections as a single unit.
