World Cup Football

[Points: Introduction—formation of FIFA—previous winners—names associated with—football—an interesting game—style and tactics of different tennis—last World Cup Football—conclusion.]

Football is a household name round the world these days. It is one of the most entertaining games and that is perhaps the reason why it is now being patronised by everybody-right from a street urchin to the executive head of a government. Nobody is sure how the game originated but one thing we are sure of-there is perhaps none who has never kicked a football in his life.

The immense popularity of this game led to the foundation of The Federation Internationale de Football (F.I.F.A.) in Paris on 29th May, 1904. But the first World Cup Football tournament, the global supremacy in football, was held as late as in 1930. A gold cup carved beauti fully was presented by the then President of the world body. It was named Jules Rimet Cup. The tournament was first hosted by Uruguay at Montivideo; the host country ultimately won it. Since then, the winners were Brazil-(thrice, 1958, 1962 and 1970), Italy (thrice, 1934, 1938 and 1982), W. Germany (twice, 1954, 1974), Uruguay (once more in 1950) and England and Argentina winning the trophy in 1966 and 1978 respectively. The original trophy, the Jules Rimet Cup. was won forever by Brazil after being the winner of the tournament for the third time in 1970. Since then F.I.F.A. has replaced the original cup by F.I.F.A. World Cup.

The tournament has seen some astonishing results. One of them is the elimination of the powerful England team (which included all time greats like Sir Stanley Mathews, Tom Finny, etc.) by an amateur football team of the U.S.A. by a solitary goal. The infamous battle of Berne (Brazil vs. Hungary, 1954), the photofinish final in London Wembly (England vs. W. Germany, 1966), the marathon semifinal at Mexico (Brazil vs. Italy, 1974), the glorious exit of France (France vs. W. Germany, 1982) at Bercelona are only a few of the many matches which will be ever remembered by the football lovers all over the world. Names like Pele (the king of football), Gar incha (Brazil, the flying sparrow), Kubillias (Peru, the slippery eel), Eusobia (Portugal, the black pearl), Lev Yashin (Soviet Russia, the black panther), Puskas (Hungary, the limping major); Backenbour (W. Germany, the lion of Mexico), Bobby Moore, Johann Kruiff Georce, Best, Paola Rossi, etc. have become household names in the football world. Antonio Carbajoli of Mexico holds the unique record of playing in all the final competitions from 1950 to 1966. While the Italian goal keeper Zoff is the oldest player to have participated in the final at 40 years, the youngest player to date is the seventeen year old Jimmy Armstrong of North Ireland. Incidentally both of them came to limelight in 1982 at Spain. The record goal scorer has been just Fontaine with 13 goals in six games in the final stages. at Stockholm, 1958.

Football lovers all over the world wait anxiously for the most exciting tournament of the world held every fourth year. They assemble in the arena with their national flags, banners, festoons and even with musical instruments just to encourage their national teams. In South America, specially in Brazil, every match won in a world cup is celebrated throughout the nation round the clock for days together in a carnival fashion.

Different styles, tactics and moods of the world famous players are always a treat to watch. The managers choose their players and train them in their strategy well in advance as a well drilled army. Often the game is won and lost in the dressing room, where the coaches and managers marshall their players like pawns on the chess board.

In the recently concluded World Cup at Spain, where 24 countries came to the final stages after a tedious elimination process, Italy won the cup by defeating W. Germany by 3-1. The hero of the tournament was Paola Rossi, who without exerting much, scored all the important goals in semifinal and final. It was in fact he who lifted the cup single-handed for Italy. Brazil, the favourite team for 1982 tournament, failed to reach the final and was eliminated by Italy, the result being 3 to 2. But the team that won the heart of all people with their superb display and artistic approach was France, Maradona, Zico, Rummannige showed their class in the tournament.

Previously football was a game of 5 S's-skill, strength, stamina, speed and shooting ability. But the recently concluded tournament proved beyond doubt that without strategy of the coach no team can ever win a World Cup.
