Thrift

[Points: What it means no uniform standard—why necessary more necessary for persons of limited income—some common lessons in thrift—compulsory thrift.]

Thrift means regulating expenses in such a way that there may be some saving from income. There can be no hard and fast standard for what should be one's expenditure and saving. It must vary according to one's circumstances. A rich man may neglect the duty of saving on special occasions, because he has the power of making up for this neglect. But the case is quite different for persons of limited income. The need for thrift is the greatest for them.

No doubt such people find it difficult to make both ends meet. Still it is their duty to make regular savings for evil days. There is the need for old age and sickness provisions; one's wife or children may require unexpected expenditure for some reason or other. How to meet these demands unless one has made savings from before? This may mean some present inconveniences; but they are nothing in comparison with the good it assures It gives strength to the mind by relieving it of anxieties about the future. And every man, however small his income, may save something if he is really serious about it. We know the proverb "Many a little makes a mickle." Good house wives in poor families are still found to lay aside a handful or two of rice from the daily quota. This does not affect any member of the family, yet it gives a good quantity of rice at the end of the month. Home-saving boxes are kept in many houses into which is put a small coin from the daily household, expenses, resulting in a good sum at the end of the year. All these are excellent lessons in thrift.

Unfortunately, however, most people do not know how to regulate expenditure. They are more concerned with the present than with the future. Sometimes a false sense of prestige makes them incur unnecessary expenditure. So thrift is being enforced more and more by legal measures Provident Fund is compulsory thrift. Life, old age, sickness and accident insurances, are compulsory in advanced countries to provide against future difficulties Let us hope that the government of our country too will take step for such compulsory thrift.
