The postman

[Points: What is a postman—his dress and duties—importance in the modern age conclusion.]

The postman is one who is employed by the Postal Department to deliver postal matters like letters, parcels, money orders, etc. to their addresses.

Formerly every postman had to put on a khaki dress and carried a bag containing postal matters for delivery. But now he mostly goes out in his normal dress with a bag hanging from his armpit and a few letters in hand. He goes from house to house on foot over great distances in sun and rain. He has other duties also like clearing post-boxes and stamping letters etc. with the name and posting date of his office. In delivering money orders and registered matters etc. he has to take the addressees' signatures on acknowledgement forms.

In old days people mostly lived at home with their near and dear ones. But with the spread of civilisation man now live far from their families and friends. So it is natural for them to be anxious for news from one another. Post and telegraph offices have come into existence to supply this need. And it is mainly through postmen that we get news from a distant place.

From this we realise how important the function of the postman is. No doubt, he brings both good and bad news. The letter from a near and dear one in a distant place may carry some bad news about him. This will certainly cause great anxiety to the receiver. But the postman is not at all to blame. He has rather enabled the addres see to think of some early relief to the distant relative. On the con trary, how cheerful and happy we feel when the postman brings us some good news like the success of a son or daughter in any sphere. This is why the postman is always welcome to every house. He is a link among the people all over the world. If he fails to discharge his duties properly any day, it may cause great harm to the persons concerned.

But in spite of the service the postman gives to us at so much physical strain, society does not appear to do proper justice to him in respect of his earthly needs and position in society. The authorities should see to this as early as possible.
