Load-shedding

[Points: Introduction—general scene—inconvenience—industrial and other losses-reasons behind load-shedding—conclusion.]

Load-shedding has become a part and parcel of our daily life. Even a kid knows this term and its effect. Till recently what was commonly known as 'power failure' has been renamed as load-shedding. But what's in a name ? We may call it 'load-shedding'. We may revert to 'power failure' or even to a drastic word 'power cut: they all mean darkness.

Nobody knows where and when it will strike. It is all powerful. It paralyses normal life. The richer sections living in luxury with modern electric gadgets like air-conditioners, fridges, electrical cooking ranges etc. are brought down to the ordinary level by a single stroke of load-shedding. Life becomes really miserable to most of them. Owing to its regular appearance normal work is hampered, domestic life gets affected, industrial output is decreased, trams stop plying and water pumping system fails. In tall buildings people get trapped in lifts and gasp for fresh air. At night it is still more powerful. Vast areas become totally dark. Only candle or hurricane lights twinkle in darkness. The beaming head-lights of passing vehicles give it a still more ghostly appearance. It is a scene of almost total black-out in the affected areas. Occassionally, the sound of a dieselonerated generators can be heard in busy shopping centres. With the fall of industrial production unemployment increases. According to a Government report about 62 million manhour had been lost in 1979 only in W. Bengal. What a great national loss we are sustaining daily! It is a shame that instead of tackling the problem on a war footing, the authorities are more interested in politicalizing the issue. Lots of water has passed through the Ganges, reams of paper have been consumed burning the midnight oil to solve the problem theoretically, but no effective measure has yet been taken. Power generation still falls short by as much as 150 MW daily.

The reasons behind load-shedding are age old plant and machinery, inter-union rivalry, poor maintenance and low grade fuel. In effective administration is making the problem still more acute. There is no doubt that load-shedding has come to stay till a couple of super thermal power stations are commissioned. We can not accept Ipad shed ling in our routine life and resign to fate. We cannot put back the arms of the clock of progress. Until and unless we can get rid of load-shedding, our future is really gloomy.
