Leadership in democracy

[Points: Introduction—who should be leaders—character of a good leader—his qualities, honesty, integrity and true love for the country statesmanlike attitude—respect for other's view—conclusion.]

Plato, the great Greek philosopher and writer is considered to be the father of democracy. He made it clear that a government re presented by the people of the country can give the fullest satisfaction to its people. In speaking of leadership he suggested that the leader ship should be among those who have no axe to grind. Many pundits of political science supported this view and suggested some changes with respect to time and hour. We should have leaders with heart and head, straightforwardness, a clear conception, feeling for the poor and above all, with patriotism and statesmanlike foresight. He should be an example to ethers.

For the successful working of a democratic government, it is absolutely essential that we should have men and women who are honest, fearless and sincere to the cause. Leadership is the most important thing in democracy. It is absolutely essential that the decision taken by the leaders must be for the interest and well-being of the majority of the people. A good leader must judge the political, economic and social condition of the country correctly and should never hesitate to take any stern measure against anyone or any wrong, come what may. A sincere, honest and devoted person who believes in the uplift of common masses cannot wait indefinitely and watch the deteriorating condition of the country.

Democracy is the rule by the people, of the people and for the people. Therefore, it is essential that the leaders should be selfless and they should see that unpatriotic and antisocial elements do not get any upperhand. It is in the anvil of stern integrity that the leaders of a country shall be judged from time to time and not by their speeches only.

In a democratic set-up, government may changes elected representatives may also be changed; but that does not mean that the overall ideals of leadership should also change. Very often it is found that whatever was achieved by the previous government is made null and void by the successive governments in the name of reform. This confuses the masses. A good leader must judge pros and cons of every decision of the previous government and then implement the ideas for the betterment of the people.

In a democracy, people and parliament are supreme. The behaviour of the leaders inside and outside the parliament should be exemplary. Respect to the opposition party and leaders should be the keynote of their daily political life. They should adhere to their pledges to the people. Leadership in democracy should come after working at the grass root level for some time-it cannot be hereditary and automatic.

A true leader must be always above any controversy. He must set an example of simple life for the people. His behaviour either in public or in private life must never cause the people to raise an eye-brow.
