Cases for and against TV

[Points: Introduction—usefulness—positive value—recreative—unsocial—wastage of time—effect on juvenile mind—costly project—if at all necessary—conclusion.]

Invented by J. L. Blaird on 27th January, 1926, Television has now reached almost all the corners of the world. TV technology is a highly sophisticated and complicated one. It is based on photo graphy and its subsequent transmission through waves for reproduction on screen after a very complicated electronic process. Television, popularly known as TV, has given the world a new dimension in every sphere of our daily life.

Earlier radio provided all listening pleasure, but with the advent of TV life has become really interesting for people of all walks of life. TV is an excellent medium for mass education. In the western coun tries it is used even for running factories and offices and children attend classes with lectures transmitted on TV screen. It is used to control traffic, to detect shop lifting, theft and to check the entry of any un desirable person in any premises. It is extensively used in space tech nology. In short, it helps, to keep an eye on everything from a dis tance. It is an important nedium of advertisement in addition to the recreation it provides for the young and old alike. Drama, cinema and many important events are screened on it. Important sports events are now screened on TV regularly, giving us an opportunity to avoid buying expensive and elusive tickets. Now we can enjoy them in our drawing room comfort. In fact, TV has brought the whole world inside our drawing room.

But is TV all that good and essential? Has it not got its darker sides too? Has TV not made people unsocial and more prone to relax before the sets rather than follow the age old custom of making social calls?h dog Reutl

Guests fell embarrassed and unwelcome when they pay a visit to someone while a programme is on. Thus TV is definitely creating a social disturbance. It may be good for the old or selfcentered people -but what about it's effect on the children? They are always temp ted to spend some valuable study hours as the TV programme is on only in the evening. Moreover, TV leaves a great influence on juvenile mind. Besides, some of the programmes, such as film shows, are not always entertaining for the whole family. There are many ways to amuse ourselves. We do not need a TV for this.

Spreading education through TV is nonsense, at least in India, where 65% of the population live below poverty line. Where villagers don't have money to buy kerosene to light a lamp can we afford to waste millions to entertain upper class people only? Money being wasted on this project can better be utilized to uplift masses. TV can wait-hunger cannot.
