Broadcasting: its educational value

[Points: What is broadcasting—entertains and educates all practical utility—has annihilated distance—conclusion.]

Broadcasting is sending out sound through the radio to different parts of the world. It is of recent origin; yet it has already become a very important feature in both public and private life. Daily, at stated hours, the radio broadcasts news, speeches, music, talks, etc. to all places, far and wide. Special broadcasts are made on special occasions to announce some important events.

Broadcasting is an admirable means for cheap entertainment and instruction. Radio-music, vocal and instrumental, entertains the people of all tastes. Even poor people can enjoy the performances of persons famous in their lines from radios in shops near the streets. 'Talks' are given on the radio. They are short lectures given by com petent persons on all sorts of subjects. Thus broadcasts bring know ledge to the door of even the poor and illiterate people. So knowledge. is no longer the privilege of a few only. In many advanced countries radio sets are placed in open places for the instruction of children and the illiterate.

Information of practical utility is also given through the radio. News bulletins of the day, market reports, weather forecasts, etc. are broadcast at stated hours. The radio gives previous warning of impending storms so that people in general, and boats and ships and planes in particular, may take proper precaution before the storms actually come. When a ship is in distress, she broadcasts appeals for help which reach some ship or ships far, far away and make them hasten to the rescue. Flying by air would not have been possible but for the radio because the movements of planes are directed by it.

The radio is also a great help in administration, enabling the government to explain through it their policies to the whole country. It has annihilated distance. Seated in our own rooms, we can hear a speech, or a song from the farthest corner of the globe. We are kept informed of the progress of a football or a cricket match hundreds of miles away. We can hear the voices of famous statesmen, scientists, etc. of the whole world. The radio has thus brought the different parts of the world closer together.
