✓ Run on Sentence:
অবিরাম গতিতে দুইটি independent clause বা স্বাধীন বাক্য চলতে থাকাকেই Run on Sentence বলে। "Run on Sentence" হচ্ছে (Sentence-এ) একটি অশুদ্ধতা বা ভুল।
✓ Run on Sentence-এর মূল সমস্যা:
দুইটি independent clause বা স্বাধীন বাক্য কখনই full stop ছাড়া, অন্য কোনো punctuation marks দিয়ে যুক্ত হওয়ার কথা নয়। কিন্তু, যখন দুইটি independent clause বিশেষ কিছু punctuation marks যেমন- comma, semi-colon etc. দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন বাক্য দুটি দেখতে সঠিক মনে হলেও আসলে তা ভুল। এটিই মূল সমস্যা এবং এটাই run on sentence.
For example :
I was on time, she was very late. = দুইটি independent clause "কমা" দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় না।
এই বাক্যটিকে সঠিক করে যেভাবে লিখা যায়:
I was on time. She was very late.
অথবা, I was on time but she was very late.
অথবা, Although I was on time, she was very late.
লক্ষণীয়, প্রথম "I was on time, she was very late" বাক্যটিতে "কমা" ব্যবহার করে দুইটি independent clause-কে যুক্ত করা হয়েছে। যেটা run on sentence বা "কমা" জনিত ভুল।
আরেকটি example:
He did not attend the party, he was ill. = "কমা" ব্যবহার করায় বাক্যটি run on sentence।
এই বাক্যটিকে সঠিক করে যেভাবে লিখা যায়:
He did not attend the party as he was ill.
অথবা, As he was ill, he did not attend the party.
অথবা, He did not attend the party because he was ill.
লক্ষণীয়, প্রথম "He did not attend the party, he was ill" বাক্যটিতে "কমা" ব্যবহার করায় দুইটি principal clause যুক্ত করার নিয়ম ভঙ্গ করা হয়েছে।
✓✓ অজানা কথা:
i. Run on sentence-এর অপর নাম fused sentence / comma fault
ii. Run on sentence-এ সর্বদাই দুইটি principal clause থাকবে।
