Literary Terms
1. Simile (উপমা):
দুটি আলাদা বস্তু বা দুইজন ব্যক্তির মধ্যে as, like, resemble, the same as ইত্যাদি শব্দগুলাের উল্লেখ করে সরাসরি তুলনা করাকে simile বলে। Example -
• I wandered lonely as a cloud.
• Youth (is) like summer morn.
• My heart is like a singing bird.
• He is as cunning as a fox.
2. Metaphor (রূপক):
দুটি আলাদা বস্তু বা দুইজন ব্যাক্তির মধ্যে comparision এর শব্দসমূহ (যেমন: as, such, like ইত্যাদি) ব্যবহার না করেই তুলনা করাকে metaphor বলে।
Example -
• Liza is a rose.
• Life is but a walking shadow.
• Nazrul is fire.
• My brother was boiling mad.
Note: একই জাতীয় বিষয়বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা হলে metaphor হবে না।
যেমন: Nazrul is Byron. এখানে, দুজনই ব্যক্তি অর্থাৎ একই বৈশিষ্ট্যের, তাই Metaphor হবে না। কিন্তু যদি বলা হয়- Life is but a walking shadow; তখন Life ও walking shadow শব্দ দুটি একই বৈশিষ্ট্যের না হওয়ায় এই তুলনাটি Metaphor হবে ।
3. Personification (ব্যক্তিরূপে প্রকাশ):
The technique of treating non-living things as humans is called personification. (যখন কোনো জড় বস্তুকে ব্যক্তিরূপে প্রকাশ করা হয় তখন তাকে personification বলে)।
Example -
• Mr. Pneumonia was not a polite old gentleman. (এখানে Pneumonia-কে ব্যক্তিরূপে কল্পনা করা হয়েছে। মূলত: Pneumonia হচ্ছে একটি রােগের নাম)
• Time and tide wait for none.
• The moon played hide and seek with the clouds.
4. Aliteration (অনুপ্রাস বা একই বর্ণ বা ধ্বনির বার বার প্রয়ােগ বা পুনরাবৃত্তি): যখন পরস্পর সম্পর্কযুক্ত বা অবস্থিত শব্দের শুরুতে একই বর্ণ বা একই ধরনের উচ্চারণ থাকে তখন তাকে alliteration বলে।
Example -
• I wandered lonely as a cloud কবিতায়
‘Ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in a sprigl dance’ লাইনে শব্দের প্রথম বর্ণে একাধিকবার T-এর ব্যবহার অনুপ্রাস/ alliteration সৃষ্টি করেছে।
• The Rime of the Ancient Mariner কবিতায় ‘Alone, alone, all, all alone/Alone on a wide, wide sea’ লাইনে শব্দের প্রথম বর্ণে একাধিকবার A-এর ব্যবহার অনুপ্রাস/alliteration সৃষ্টি করেছে।
5. Oxymoron (বিরােধালঙ্কার): যে বাক্যে পাশাপাশি দুটি বিপরীতধর্মী শব্দ থাকে তাকে oxymoron বলে ।
Example -
• He is regularly irregular.
এখানে regular ও irregular পাশাপাশি দুটি বিপরীতধর্মী শব্দ।
• He is constructively destructive. এখানে constructive ও destructive পাশাপাশি দুটি বিপরীতধর্মী শব্দ। |
6. Hyperbole (অতিরঞ্জন/অতিশয়ােক্তি): কোনাে ব্যক্তি/ বস্তুকে তার উপযুক্ত স্থানের চেয়ে অতিরঞ্জনের মাধ্যমে অতি গুরুত্ব প্রদান।
করাকে বা বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা করাকে hyperbole বলে।
যেমন: Ten thousand saw I at a glance. এখানে at a glance বা একদৃষ্টিতে কেউ ten thousand গণনা করতে পারে না কিন্তু তবুও বলা হয়েছে অর্থাৎ অতিরঞ্জন প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। অনুরূপভাবে -
• “All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. oh, oh, oh!”
• “In never-ending line.”
7. Homonyms: Spelling এবং Pronunciation এক কিন্তু ভিন্ন অর্থ প্রকাশ করে এমন শব্দকে বলে Homonyms।
যেমন: You are right (সঠিক) = Look at your right (ডানদিকে) side.
8. Homophones: উচ্চারণ একই রকম কিন্তু Spelling স্বতন্ত্র এরূপ শব্দকে Homophones বলে। যেমন: Knew - New
9. Acronym (আদ্যক্ষর): A word formed from or based on the initial letters or syllables of other words.
যেমন:
ADB (Asian Development Bank);
UN (United Nations)
