Ellipsis: Ellipsis means omission of words or sentences.
It is also of three types —
1. Nominal ellipsis: Why don't you use a knife? I haven't got any.
(To understand this answer, the noun knife is to be supplied after any .)
2. Verbal ellipsis: Is it going to rain? It may or may not.
(The main verb was not used in this answer. To understand this, we have to supply the verb rain).
3. Clausal ellipsis: Can you swim? Yes. (The word yes means I can swim.)
