Word Function With Important Examples

CHANGE OF A WORD FROM ONE PART of SPEECH TO ANOTHER 
(এক পদ হইতে অন্য পদে WORd -এর পরিবর্তন) 

OR, WORD FUNCTION (শব্দের কার্য)

কোন ভাষার শব্দসম্ভারের বিচিত্র এবং বহুবিধ ব্যবহার রহিয়াছে। ইংরেজী ভাষার শব্দগুলির মধ্যে এ বৈশিষ্ট্য লক্ষ করা যায়। একই শব্দকে কোন বাক্যে Noun হিসাবে, আবার কোন বাক্যে Verb হিসাবে, আবার কোন বাক্যে Adverb হিসাবে ব্যবহার করা হইয়া থাকে। শব্দের এই একাধিক ব্যবহার বা উপযোগিতাকে Word Function (শব্দের কার্য) বলা হয়। উদাহরণের মাধ্যমে বিষয়টি পরিষ্কার করা যাকঃ

(a) She has a beautiful Face.

(b) She faces a difficulty. 

(c) Peter lives a fast life.

(d) Peter runs fast.

উপরের (a) বাক্যে 'face' noun (b) বাক্যে 'faces' verb; (c) বাক্যে 'fast' Adjective এবং (d) বাক্যে 'fast' adverb রূপে ব্যবহৃত হইয়াছে। 

উদ্দেশ্যঃ Word Function অনুশীলনের উদ্দেশ্য হইতেছে শিক্ষার্থীর শব্দ ব্যবহার ক্ষমতাকে বাড়ানো এবং সাবলিল করে তোলা। ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের অনেকেই অনেক ইংরেজী শব্দ জানে; কিন্তু সেই সকল শব্দের একটি মাত্র ব্যবহারই তাহারা

সাধারণতঃ জানে। যেমন Hand শব্দটির অর্থ সব ছাত্র-ছাত্রীরই জানা। কিন্তু তাহারা এ শব্দটিকে শুধুমাত্র Noun হিসাবেই ব্যবহার করিতে জানে। কিন্তু Hand শব্দটি Verb হিসাবেও বহুল ব্যবহৃত।

যেমনঃ My sister handed me a cup of tea.

এখানে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু নিয়ম সহ Word Function দেওয়া হইলঃ


              (i) A Noun used as a Verb

Head — মাথা    
Keep your hand on your head. (Noun)
I headed the ball into the goal. (Verb) 

Bag — থলে      
He lost his bag. (Noun)
They bagged good points. (Verb) 

People — জনগণ  
Many People (Noun) go to chittagong. (Noun)
Who will people (verb) the new island? (Verb) 

House — বাড়ী    
He lives in a big house. (Noun)
The shop is housed (verb) in a small room. (Verb) 

Land — জমি   
He bought a piece of land. (Noun.)    
The plane landed at karachi. (Verb) 

Sugar — চিনি     
He likes sugar. (Noun)
I do not sugar my tea. (Verb) 

Father — বাবা      
We respect our fathers. (Noun)
Who will father the baby? (Verb) 

Hand — হাত       
We have two hands. (Noun)
They handed over the robbers to the police. (Verb) 

Face — মুখ       
Wash your hands and face. (Noun)
He must face the robbers boldly. (Verb) 

Fish — মাছ        
I do not like fish. (Noun)
He went to fish in the river. (Verb) 

Man — মানুষ      
Man is a social animal. (Noun)
The ship was manned by ten sailors. (Verb) 

Water — পানি   
We should drink pure water. (Noun)
He waters the plant. (Verb) 

Milk — দুধ      
We drink pure milk. (Noun)
The man is milking his cow. (Verb) 

Book — বই      
I like good books. (Noun)
Have you booked your seat? (Verb) 

Bell — ঘণ্টা      
Ring the bell. (Noun)
Who is to bell the cat ? (Verb) 

Dog — কুকুর   
The dog (Noun) is a faithful animal. (Noun) 
He dogged my foot-steps. (Verb) 

Paper - কাগজ  
I want a ream of paper. (Noun)
I shall paper (verb) the walls of my reading room. (Verb) 

Bottle — বোতল    
Give me a bottle. (Noun)
I bottled (verb) the medicine. (Verb) 

Sun — সূর্য    
The sun rises in the east. (Noun)
We should sun our bed daily. (Verb) 



             (ii) A Verb used as a Noun 

Cut — কাটা   
Cut your coat according to your cloth. (Verb) 
This is the short cut plan of our drama. (Noun)

Call —  ডাকা     
My teacher called me. (Verb) 
They responded to the call. (Noun)

Start — শুরু      
The bus at last started. (Verb)
He had a good start in life. (Noun)

Walk — হাঁটা       
He walked very fast. (Verb) 
We should go out for a walk. (Noun) 

Cook — রান্না 
She cooks well. (Verb) 
She was a good cook. (Noun)

End — শেষ    
The story ends here. (Verb) 
The song had no end. (Noun)

Run — দৌড়ান  
He runs in the sun. (Verb)
He failed in the run of  life. (Noun)

Look — তাকান   
Look before you leap. (Verb)
The school building has a nice look. (Noun)

Talk — কথা বলা    
He talks to me. (Verb) 
I have no taste dirty talks. (Noun)

Drink — পান করা     
He drinks water. (Verb) 
Give him a cup of cool drink. (Noun)

Drive — চালনা  করা  
He drives the car. (Verb) 
Let us have a drive.(Noun)

Work — কাজ করা    
He works in the field. (Verb) 
I have finished my work. (Noun)

Open — খোলা         
Open at page 60. (Verb) 
We should take exercise in the open. (Noun)

Hold — ধরা         
Hold your tongue. (Verb) 
He has no hold on his brother. (Noun)

Need — প্রয়োজন   
I need (verb) his help. (Verb) 
I have no need of your help. (Noun)

Close — বন্ধ     
The school closes at 4 P.M. (Verb) 
The game came to a close. (Noun)



           (iii) A Noun used as an Adjective 

Capital — রাজধানী  
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. (Noun)
Capital punishment was inflicted on the thief. (Adjective)

Head — মাথা        
I have a head. (Noun)
The head boy of our class is meritorious. (Adjective)

Gold — সোনা    
Gold and silver have I none. (Noun)
He has lost his gold ring. (Adjective)

River — নদী       
The river is full to the brim. (Noun)
The river fish is very tasteful. (Adjective)


            (iv) An Adjective used as a Noun

Poor — দরিদ্র     
He is a poor boy. (Adjective)
The poor are happy. (Noun)

Rich — ধনী       
He is a rich man. (Adjective)
The rich are not always happy. (Noun)

Deep — গভীর  
The Meghna is a deep river. (Adjective)
The ship floats on the deep. (Noun)

Blue — নীল    
The sky is blue. (Adjective)
It is a bolt from the blue. (Noun)

Daily — দৈনিক  
This a daily paper. (Adjective)
I subscribe to a daily. (Noun)


            (v) An Adjective used as a Verb

Long — লম্বা   
How long is the river? (Adj.)
He longs to meet his brother. (Verb) 

Black — কালো  
The dog is black. (Adj.)
Black my shoes. (Verb) 

Clean — পরিচ্ছন্ন  
We should be neat and clean. (Adj.)
Clean your dirty cloths. (Verb) 

Blind — অন্ধ    
He is a blind man. (Adj.)
Affection has blinded him to the faults of his son. (Verb) 

Wrong — ভুল    
His answer is wrong. (Adj.)
He has wronged to me. (Verb) 


       (vi) An Adjective used as an Adverb

Long — লম্বা  
It is a long train. (Adj.)
The happening took place long ago. (Adv.)

Better — ভাল    
Habib is better than hasan. (Adj.)
This pen writes better than that pen. (Adv.)

Short — খাটো       
He is a short boy. (Adj.)
His food ran short. (Adv.)

Easy — সহজ      
This work is easy. (Adj.)
He took the matter easy. (Adv.)

First — প্রথম    
He was the first boy of the class. (Adj.)
Why did you first go to Dhaka? (Adv.)


             (vii) A Verb used as an Adjective.

Like — পছন্দ    
He likes my pen. (Verb) 
His brother spoke in a like manner. (Adj.)

Long — আশা করা  
He longs to meet his brother. (Verb)
It is a long story. (Adj.)

Light — জ্বালান    
Light the lamp. (Verb)
The patient should be given light food. (Adj.)

Right — শুদ্ধ করা     
Try to right the wrong. (Verb)
He is the right man in the right place. (Adj.)

Last — শেষ করা  
It will not last long. (Verb)
He is the last boy in the class. (Adj.)


         (viii) A Noun used as an Adverb

Home — বাড়ী    
He has gone home. (Noun)
I saw him on his way home. (Adv.) 

Down — নীচে 
Life has its ups and downs. (Noun) (উত্থান-পতন )
Pull down the curtain. (Adv.) 

Need — চাহিদা   
Our needs are few. (Noun)
I must need go there. (Adv.) 

        

         (ix) An Adverb used as a Noun 

Now — এখন  
I shall go home now. (Adv.)
You ought to have done it before now.(Noun)

Here —এখানে        
He lives here. (Adv.)
Mohastan is six miles from here. (Noun)
