Subject-এর Number ও Person অনুসারে verb-এর রূপ নির্ধারিত হয় যাকে Subject-Verb Agreement বলে।
Subject-Verb Agreement এর কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম নিচে দেওয়া হলো:
1. সাধারণত Subject singular হলে verbও singular হয় এবং Subject plural হলে verbও plural হয়।
যেমন —
- Roni is a student. They come here every week.
- Brazil has won the world cup four times.
2. সাধারণত and দ্বারা দুটি Noun/Pronoun যুক্ত হলে verb plural হয়। যেমন-Mina and Rina are two cousin.
তবে and দ্বারা দুই বা ততােধিক Noun যুক্ত হয়ে যদি একই ব্যক্তি বা বন্ধুকে নির্দেশ করে তাহলে verbটি Singular হবে আর পৃথক পৃথক ব্যক্তি/বস্তুকে বােঝালে verbটি plural হবে। পৃথক ব্যক্তি/বস্তু বােঝানাের জন্য উভয় Noun এর পূর্বে the বসে।
যেমন —
- The headmaster and secretary was present at the last meeting.
- The headmaster and the secretary of the school were present.
3. And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি Noun একই ভাব বা অর্থ প্রকাশ করলে verbটি Singular হয় । গাণিতিক হিসাবের ক্ষেত্রেও verb singular হয়।
যেমন—
- Slow and steady wins the race.
- The horse and carriage is ready.
- Four and four makes eight.
ব্যতিক্রম: Time and tide-এর ক্ষেত্রে verb plural হয়। যেমন— - Time and tide wait for none.
04. Either. or, Neither. nor, Not . but দ্বারা যুক্ত subject গুলাের মধ্যে শেষের subject অনুসারে verb singular বা plural হয়।
যেমন—
- He or his brothers have done the work.
- Neither Rini nor Simi is qualified for the job.
- Not Rony but I am wrong.
05. One of বাক্যের subject হলে এর পর plural Noun/Pronoun verb singular একইভাবে subject এর Headwordটি singular verb singular হয় এবং plural হলে verb ও plural হয়। যেমন—
- At least one of the students gets full marks everytime.
- The mangoes of Rajshahi are famous.
06. As well as, in addition to, including, no less than, with, along with, together with, accompanied by Noun Pronoun যুক্ত হলে verb subject অনুযায়ী হয়।
যেমন —
- The father with his three sons has left the place.
- Ashik as well as his parents is going to Sylhet.
07. Anybody, anyone, no one, nobody, somebody, someone, something, nothing, everyone, everybody, everything, each one, another ইত্যাদি subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে verbটি সর্বদা singular হয়।
যেমন—
- Everything has been done to help him.
- Something is better than nothing.
08. Half of, a lot of, a great deal of, plenty of প্রভৃতি phrase গুলোর পরে Singular, Noun/Pronoun অথবা Uncountable Noun হলে Verb singular হয় এবং plural, Noun/Pronoun হলে verb plural হয়।
যেমন—
- Half of the work has been done.
- A lot of people are going abroad for livelihood.
09. নির্দিষ্ট দূরত্ব, ওজন, অর্থ, সময় এবং দেশ, বই, ম্যাগাজিন, চলচ্চিত্র, সংবাদপত্র, নাটক ইত্যাদি দেখতে plural হলও verb সর্বদা singular হয়। যেমন—
- Ten miles is a long distance.
- The Arabian Nights is still a great favourite.
10. Cattle, aristocracy, poultry, people, peasantry, gentry ইত্যাদি Nounগুলো দেখতে singular হলেও এগুলাে মূলত plural হওয়ায় এদের পর verb plural হয়।
যেমন —
Cattle are grazing in the field.
11. News, mathematics, physics, politics, gallows ইত্যাদি দেখতে plural হলেও এরা মূলত singular হওয়ায় verb-ও singular হবে।
যেমন —
- No news is good news.
- Physics is my favourite subject.
12. কোন Noun এর পূর্বে নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যাবাচক word যেমন— Pair, dozen, hundred, thousand ইত্যাদি থাকলে verb singular হয়।
যেমন —
A pair of shoes was bought for him.
13. A number of দিয়ে subject শুরু হলে verb plural হয় এবং The number of দিয়ে শুরু হলে verb singular হয়।
যেমন—
- There are a large number of boys playing in the field.
- The number of people was very high.
14. Collective Noun দ্বারা অখণ্ড সমষ্টিকে বােঝালে verb টি singular হয় কিন্তু খণ্ডিত বা বিভাজন বােঝালে plural verb হয়।
যেমন—
- The committee has approved the bill.
- The jury were divided in their opinion.
15. ভগ্নাংশ অর্থাৎ One-third, two-fourths ইত্যাদি দ্বারা গঠিত subject এর পরবর্তী Noun/Pronoun অনুযায়ী তাদের verb singular বা plural হয়।
যেমন—
- Three-fourths of the work has been finished.
- One-third of the mangoes have been eaten.
16. Many, subject-এ থাকলে পরের Noun ও Verb — plural হয়, Many a থাকলে পরবর্তী Noun ও Verb উভয়টিই singular হয়।
যেমন —
- Many men are walking in the park.
- Many a man has tried to complete the work.
17. Relative pronoun এর Antecedent- এর person ও number অনুসারে পরবর্তী verb এর রূপ হয়।
যেমন—
- A reward has been announced for the employees who have worked hard.
- It is I who am to blame.
