 A preposition is a word placed before a Noun (sometimes also in front of gerund verbs) or a Pronoun 

to show its relation to some other words in the sentence. Look at the following sentences:

 

The girl sat beside her mother.

 

I walked with my brother.

 

They were in the classroom.

 

Kamal lives in Dhaka.

 

She is good at English.

 

The underlined words in the sentences above are prepositions.
