Use of SO --- THAT

Joining of Sentences 

Sub + verb + so + adjective /adverb + that + second sentence.

** He spoke very slowly. I could not follow him.

Ans: He spoke so slowly that I could not follow him.


** It is a very interesting matter. I can not overlook it.

Ans: It is so interesting a matter that I can not overlook it.


** Della saved a very small amount. She could not buy a gift for Jim.

Ans : Della saved so small an amount that she could not buy a gift for Jim.



** These French white wines are very light.
They are wonderful for digestion.

These French white wines are so light that they are wonderful for
digestion.



Examples worked out :

1. The problem is very hard. We cannot solve it.

Ans: The problem is so hard that we cannot solve it.


2. The weather is extremely cold. We cannot go out of the room.

-- The weather is so cold that we cannot go out of the room.


3. He runs quite fast. I cannot overtake him.

-- He runs so fast that I can not overtake him.



** Exercise for practice:

The weather was very cold. There were no birds or animals in the
snow covered country.

The writer was very young. He did not learn to say 'no' to a woman.

The load was very heavy. The porter could not carry it.

The old man was very weak. He could not move.

The snowdrifts are very deep. The institution is cut off from the villa
below.

Jerry was very small in size. He was not fit for chopping wood.

Their colours were very beautiful. He was filled with wonder.

Fog filled the mountain passes treacherously. I dared not drive
night.

They are very nice presents. They can not be used just at present.

The sailors' throats were very dry. They could not speak.

It was far beyond my means. I had never thought of going there.

The boy is very intelligent. He can solve the difficult sum.
