Formation of Noun Phrases


📝 Noun Phrases are formed in the following manners :

(1) Adjective + Noun 
a good deal, ardent spirits, bad blood, black mai, a black sheep, blue blood, a lunatic asylum, broken english, capital punishment, a narow escape, a burning question, a Christmas tree, broad daylight, laughing stock, a short cut, honest earnings, a down train, an up train, drinking water, drawing room, waiting room, fair weather, a gala day, the golden age, a sunny day, a rainy day, a haunted house 

(2) Noun + Preposition + Object
a beast of proy, a bed of roses, a bed of thorn, a child of fortune, a jack of all trades, a man of letters, an apple of discord,  a beast of burden, a man of parts, a bolt from the blue, a fish out of water, the law of the land, birds of loather.

(3) Possessive Noun + Noun 
King's evidonce, the king's speech, king's evil, a spider's web, God's acre,  the lion's share, a mare's nest, Penelope's web, the baker's dozen, bird's eye view.

(4) Noun + and/or + Noun
Bag and baggage, bread and butter, flesh and blood, heart and sou, kith and kin, knife and fork, Alpha and Omega, part and parcel, stuff and nonsence, sum and
substance, day and night, din and bustle, merits, and demerits, time and tide,
ups and downs, friend or foe, loss or gain, rhyme or reason, weal or woe

(5) Noun + Noun
maiden speech, death bed, crocodile tears, a country house, a bosom friend, a bus joumey, bus fare, a leap year, a jail tird

(6) Noun Infinitive or Noun Infinitive + Adverbial Object 
To walk in the morning is good for health. To swim is a good exercise. 
To err is human. I like to play cricket, 
They tried to solve the
problem.
To top the list is his ambition. 
He hopes to come out successfully in
the competition.

(7) Gerund + Adverbial/Object 
Walking in the morning is good for health. He likes playing football. 
I enjoy reading poetry.
The girl is fond of singing folk songs. 
We love travelling new countries.
Playing in the rain may cause fever.
